How to hotwire ignition?

I was referring to your neighbours pickup.

As for the bike, I am going to guess he means the ignition barrel.

Hot-wiring an old bike is easy, move the power feed wire on the ignition switch to the "ON" terminal and you are done.

Oh you guys ride jap bikes..I forgot

That will get you absolutely nowhere. ::) Unless you are an Italian bike riding snob who think their Ducati, Moto-Guzzi, Benelli, Aprillia, MV Agusta is "better" just because of where it came from... that's right Italian.

By 1967, Harley was hard-pressed to compete with
the Japanese light-weight invasion. Harley Davidson had acquired the Italian
Aermacchi division and the decision was made to shift
small bike production to Italy.

But to help with your question, you can run any engine with minimal wiring, some less than others. .... even with it setting on the bench. If your bike has a Magnito barely any at all is required. BUT you will need an ignition switch of somekind , unless you want to pull a plug wire every time to shut it down after getting it started
Try here for specific info on your little Italian bike... http://www.hdsprint.com/forum/index.php
and found where you can download a manual here... http://www.scribd.com/doc/100718696/Aermacchi-H-D-Bikes-Manual

I didn't know that bike was Italian! Now I would like to have one! I wonder what one is worth with the wiring?

A momentary switch rigged to kill should suffice, no?

Hell I just have a toggle switch between the magneto and coil on my first bike. It was a big upgrade form using the choke to kill it. Gotta love old z50s

That box may run the electrical system for lights and what have you. If the motor runs off a magneto you won't need any wires to start the motor. The magneto position adjusts the timing and creates its own spark. My Sportster runs off a magneto and the only wire I need is for the kill switch. The entire electrical system is a separate system on mine than runs on the total loss system.
Does your bike have a generator or alternator?

Does your bike have a coil and a separate magneto? Usually the coils are inside the magneto as a combined electrical system for the motor.

Ignition coil.

Look at the pic...He has no carburetor....No carb means no fuel...so he won't need a spark either......

Heck, remove the engine, add a Shimano Derailleur and he will have the coolest Harley around....

It's not an "ECU" as we know it. It appears to be a regulator or maybe a rectifier and regulator in one box but it's not a Electronic CU....

OK, so it's maybe points, maybe not, maybe magneto, maybe battery ignition system.

First step is to get a wiring diagram and a manual to determine what the ignition system consists of. Then you can troubleshoot it and check the wiring to get a spark. I think you will find that it's a flywheel magneto system with points hiding inside the flywheel. They will need to be cleaned and gapped first and then check each circuit one at a time for continuity and to see if the 2 charge coils are in spec.

Looks like you can get a manual here http://www.sunnymeadcycles.com/AermacchiHD.html

What does the magneto do if there is no coil in it?

And yes I know they can sometimes be together, but most often they are not.

To answer you question, it is used to beat condescending pricks brains out.
And don't try to point out any supposed irony... I just don't care.

Danp, I just found these. Thought it might be of some interest to you. They are for the RC125 so I am not sure if they will cross over. Should be close if not the same.

There is really good instillation instructions on there site. The AC would allow you to run without any battery or indicators, but you can still connect up a light for riding at night.
The DC will allow you to run a full setup if you decided to later on down the line.

Also, no buggering around with point on those two setups.

As for finding the original wiring diagram I have had no luck in the quick search I had. This is the closest I got.

heres a link Im sure with a little looking you could find the right one. :)

Damn Mrlvlagic, Nice find.

Dan, try pages 28, 30 and 33. Not sure what year your bike is but those are for '70, '71 and '72 respectively.

Cool thanks.

I was able to find the original wiring diagram. I have everything wired up correctly with the exception of 1 wire going from the rectifier to the battery, because I don't have a battery. I don't think its a problem because both of these bikes have been run before without a battery, but I thought the wiring was a little different. Not sure. I have the original carb on, new spark plug, fresh gas but I just cant get it to fire.

The second diagram with 2 wires coming off the magneto is my bike.

Pfft, Shimano on an Italian bike? He wants Campagnolo!
