How to look over an old engine

gribbs

Coast to Coast
I got my 2nd engine up to my place finally. It has sat outside (all ports and holes covered in duct tape) for who knows how long, and I have no clue when it last ran. How can I survey it to check compression and anything else I should be looking out for? How can I check the transmission parts out? What to look for, etc etc. Its a CB750 1978 and the carbs have already been cleaned so they are taken care of.

If it seems sticky turning over at first there are some stuck rings which may require disassembly...or your favorate ring releasing fluid might work. Diesel fuel, liquid wrench, WD......
To check compression just take a 12 volt battery a compression guage and a friend to the engine. Jump the battery to the starter to check compression. Much eazier than trying to kick an engine on the ground. Its kinda sparky but dont worry.
Checking the transmission would be tough. Sitting for a time the clutch plates may be slightly stuck together.

Hmm none of that sounds to easy or quick. I am super busy with work and getting my bike running again. This project will need to wait. Thanks for the reply Mojo
