how to register a web domain?

Been Around the Block
I understand you can purchase a web domain name (I'm curious for one to make regarding a school project).

Any suggestions? GoDaddy seems to be the popular choice, but are they a good service? Too pricey? I'm not too knowledgeable about this stuff, thanks!

Here in the UK / EU domain names can be bought for around $10 / year for a co.uk. - dot coms are usually $20 - $25.

It's the hosting that comes a little more expensive - typically here in the UK $50 - $80 / year.

When I was self-employed I used 2mhost.com for my website. I believe it was $30 per year, including the domain name, and 10 email addresses.

If you're going to be hosting it somewhere, make sure they support the type of site you'll be building, in terms of type of database, programming languages, software support (e.g. wordpress, forum software, etc.), etc.

Im using ONE.com for my hosting. its free for the first year (well £9 set up fee) and then £25 a year after.
using mine for self promotion when i graduate in may. Dont expect to use their templates or uploader if your a mac person like me you have to go thru a FTP client
Hope that helps
:)

p.s
mikejerrold.com ;)

I use Godaddy and like it... I just got hacked the other day though... don't know if that means anything.

First step is to come up with a domain nae and then see if it's available. I go to Network solutions WHOIS database for that.

Then register the name with a Registrar. That can be anything from $10 pa to 40pa. We use Network Solutions and I think they are 35 bucks a year.

Next you find someone to HOST that web site. Some domain registrars will give you a small allocation of server space for free and the rest charge. We host ours at Sentris in WA and Alentus. I like Alentus for their service and they are great for ASP and dot net sites.

And then you design and build your site. You can do it in good old fashioned HTML or use something like Front Page from Microsoft (now extinct) or similar HTML builders. Or use the templates that some web hosting companies provide. We do all our own web stuff in house and our database guy just moved to Arizona so he's our virtual employee. Templates are nice and look professional, but we spent ages developing thousands of templates and layouts back in the day (can you say Y2K?)

Then you PUBLISH the site. Many software tools allow you to publish form there and hosting companies make it easy. We use a free FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload pictures, html and data files.

The easy way for most people to get up and running is to do Registration, Hosting, templates and uploading all from the one location.

Thanks guys, a lot of good answers! I'm doing a research/design project on front motorcycle suspension and one of the ways to get a better grade is to publish a website. I'm thinking hell, why bother trying to make one on the campus server (which sucks sloppy balls), just make one myself? Maybe wordpress or blogger software, idk. I'll let everyone know if I do make forward progress with this.

Go for blogger. It's free and easy.

Definitely just start up a Wordpress blog, and get it hosted free somewhere. No need to even buy a domain name etc. although you can sign up at GoDaddy and get free hosting (will have an ad at the top).

you can also register a domain at Hover.com
I prefer it because they don't try to upsell you on about 2000 other things before you check out.
If you're just making a site for a school project, I might suggest squarespace.com
you can pick your domain name, and they have site customizing tools built in, plus a free 14-day trial without even needing a credit card.
check my art site out, I threw it together in about 3 hours.
