How to widen a tank tunnel

Curious question, Marc: You say you have $10K in it, what percentage of that is paid labor, and what did you actually spend on the parts? Tank, seat, fairing, all of that is not relevant, I can build all of that. We have been wanting to take on a similar project for a bit.

Hagerty Insurance for one who I have my insurance with, they don't take classic values lightly when accepting insurance policies.

Thank You guys…..its appreciated!
you're welcome

::) did you have to explain why you dont have a running motor after a year at a engine builders shop

Was it worth more becouse its the only motor in the history of man kind that is built to such a high performance standard that it doesnt run head gaskets

...Thanks guys, exactly what i wanted to hear..

Oh, and if you really only need about 1cm on either side... Just carefully hammer the tunnel. Triple check wjere you need to change the tunnel though. Oft times it's just a small area that doesnt fit and not the entire length.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

.yeah i definately dont have the skills for a tank weld job... I was surprised it was suggested..

I'm no professional, but I feel the best way for what you want is to hammer the sides in a lil, just take your time n you'll be good. You can puts strips of masking tape in the tunnel so when you test fit it'll show you were to hammer. Most old gas tanks are of high tin content n make em a bitch to weld n the metal is very brittle. It can be done but after a couple hundred miles they may start cracking on ya. Not to mention if there's a shitload of rust in the bottom.

Will take before / after pics..

I'd rather have mine, have $10k in, recently appraised at $40-$50K

Ok... I gotta ask...

Who appraised your bike at $50,000?

Yea Yea, Hagerty and Grundy, etc. offer agreed value policies at basically any value you want to put on it and pay for. So if Marc wanted to take out a $XXX agreed value policy on his $500 HD, they would let him, however the premiums would be cost prohibitive.. so I call bullshit.

That being said, Marc is an idiot and nobody should waste their time arguing with stupidity.

Two sayings pop to mind when I read this thread.

Don't argue with an idiot because they will lower you to their level and beat you with experience.

Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics, even if you win you are still retarded.

Back on topic though. The masking tape on the inside of the tank is a bloody good idea Joon-yah. I am going to have to give that a go when the time comes around to beat the crap out of my tank to get it to fit.

As for the type of hammer to use. I was working with a plastic ended hammer, not sure if it is best thing because it seems to be folding around the end of the hammer as I strike it. Thinking I might have to grab one of those tear drop shaped hammers.

Surprisingly my policy is only $400/yr, far from cost prohibitive. I jumped on it when the quote came in, I was expecting a number probably 10x's that. It won't cover it as a daily driver nor during any racing. but if it is stolen I get a fat check which was my only concern.

Ok... so this guy was expecting to pay $4,000/yr for insurance on a sportster that he sez he has 10 grand into . Yes, seriously, he really said that. So he jumped on a quote of $400/year. Here's the best part- the insurance does not cover the bike if he actually rides it as daily driver ....

This has to make a top ten list somewhere ;D

You're a fucking idiot to make such assumptions. As you said you expected the rates to be cost prohibitive as I would have. That doesn't mean I was willing to pay what I thought it would cost ( I exaggerated the $4K). Would expect to pay insurance on your bike you say is valued at $5-$6k based on your investment of $400? Hagerty is a classic vehicle insurer and therefore can offer rates based on the fact that the vehicles are not daily driven. Why is that so hard to understand. My bike is not the kind of bike most people would use a s a daily driver. Most of the money spent on my bike was spent in the 70's and the value has increased tremendously over the last 38 years. Did you pay $400 for your $5k bike last week, I think not. If I insured it through my regular insurance with State Farm as a daily driver they would have only valued it at blue book value of a 62 Sportster which is nothing.

I spread mine with a scissor jack. Not really sure it was the best way to do it, but it worked. So its an option.

Cool, did it impact on outside shape, or crushed the tunnel metal only?
