Hi everyone, I'm an inexperienced rider (never owned a streetbike, only ever scooted around in my 79 can-am mx-5) getting ready to fix up my first bike.

this 67 bonnie has been taunting me for the past 8 years now, and this christmas, I finally convinced the old man to let me have it. in a week or so, it is going to make the trip up a flight of stairs to spend the winter in my kitchen. In the mean time, I figured I would say "hi" as I will surely be annoying the lot of you with countless questions over the next few months.

WOW ... nice bike. Looks like a '72 Bonnie! Dual overhead cams ... one serious ride!
Bonnies are nice bikes. Parts can kill your wallet though.
Let us know if there's anything you need

a '72 you say? my dad told me it was a 67 : ??? when I get this thing home, I will have to submit some good pictures and figure out what exactly this bike is, as it isn't stock and my dad doesn't know whats been done to it.

the engine turns over fine and it was apparently running before it was stored a good 20 years ago so hopefully I won't have to track down a lot of parts. my budget is going to be roughly $4k-5k as I am probably the poorest 24 year old you've met.

Welcome to the forum!!...
That 72 or 69 (whatever it is), sure is purdy!!!...
What direction are you planning to go with the bike... a restoration to stock or a bad-ass Cafe racer??...

though I do find old bonnies pretty sexy in their original form, I have a sick infatuation with cafe racers and this is going to become one of my dream bikes.

Welcome riverman. Nice bike, should be a fun project. I'm in the same boat as you, this is my first street bike (don't have licence yet either, will be getting this spring). Keep us posted on your progress, best of luck.

There are three things that are throwing me off:
1) The radiator/oil cooler. Triumphs didn't have them in the 70's or earlier ... or at least from what I can tell
2) Between the tachometer and the Speedometer is a third smaller gauge. I don't think was stock either.
3) Those don't look like Amal carbs. They look like Mikumis.

scarcat : the oil cooler isn't stock, and mikuni carbs aren't either (good eye BTW). the third gauge is an oil temperature gauge if my memory serves me well (which it rarely does). other than that, I don't know what is stock and what isn't. My dad tried to tell me the engine was bored out to 750 but last time I checked, these engines couldn't reliably handle a displacement of much more than 700cc.

750 is really really big. Everything else looks relatively stock. I guess you can find out the year with the VIN at the ministry. There's a lot of rust on those parts (i.e. lots of time ith a wire brush, sandpaper, etc).

Let us know how it goes.

I'm 24, and I'm poor too!!!! (It's because of these bikes!!) Nice little project you got there, should be a load of fun. Welcome to the board, take a look around.

May I add my welcome too!

I'm 52 and I spend most of my disposable income on these crazy things too! Fortunately, my wife is somewhat understanding! For now, anywhay.

If you 'have it' as bad as I do, once you scratch 'it', you'll never give this up! Enjoy!

71/72 had conical hubs and different forks[internal spings]

cafe will be the most economic way to go!!to restore to orig you will have to be a very rich poor 24 year old LOL good luck

hmm, looks like my plans for this bike may not happen after all (not much of a surprise, my dad is great at building me up than letting me down).

he has a sentimental attachment to this bike and won't let me chop it up (despite the fact that it is rusting to shit in a barn) and doesn't want to let me take it home. i can understand not wanting to give this bike away, but I don't know why he said I could have it in the first place >:|

at any rate, there is a 78 cb750 a 15 minute drive away that is apparently running and going for $850. waiting to hear back from him, but hopefully this pans out, wish me luck!

Sorry to hear you can't cafe the bike, but I guess I can understand your father's attachment. Maybe ask your dad if you could both restore it instead. Would be a cool project, shame to just let it sit there like that.

Good luck with getting the CB.

heading out in an hour to take a look at the bike and drop a deposit, looks like I got first dibs on it :) will take some pictures of it tonight for my own pleasure. at any rate, building a cb750 cafe will most likely be a bunch easier than the bonnie would have been.

looks like it's my lucky day. for $850, this is a hell of a clean bike. tomorrow I am bringing it home and will post pictures

Good for you!

Now do a very clean, sweet ass Cafe conversion on the CB and then show your father what your capable of. He may even be jealous
of your abilities and want you to have the Triumph?

I know how he feels, but there are ways to modify the bike without ruining it's value(turn it back to stock condition) and still have it look killer in the end. You can't hold on to things forever and if he hasn't done anything to it in twenty years I'm pretty sure it would just sit there for another twenty. Bikes were built to be well...RIDDEN and not stuffed away in an old barn so they could die a slow death.

Good luck and take your time on the CB and do it right even if you make mistakes and have to do things over you'll be happy you did things the correct and safe way.
