Hey bro welcome to DTT. And the darkside of the GR lol. Get in touch with big rich hes the guru of all things GR. As for parts yea the get harder to find each day but with a lil persistance and a shit ton of ingenuity all will be well. what are your plans for the ole girl? my father lives in Hollywood fl. where abouts are you?
I am about 3-4 hours from Hollywood, I am down in Naples, Fl
I really want to see if a newer motor can be dropped in, if not I want to find a way to put a turbo on the bike (cackle manically)
Not a lot of boost, around 3-5 PSI haha enough to keep up with everyone use, while being very very unique!
I need a starter currently, and I am thinking about getting a new gas tank, mine is all gnarly inside haha
and thanks for the warm welcome I ALSO own a 1981 yamaha virago 920R that is going to be tinkered with sometime soon, but idk what I wanna do with it yet
A newer motor, huh? Watch the saddle around the current lump - Suzuki designed the GR motor to be small (smaller than a GS450 / GS500 for sure). Maybe look into a DR650 motor? Sure it's the same displacement, but they do make big bore kits for the DR.
Oh yeah: I wouldn't really consider a turbo or anything like that for the GR motor. The long stroke of the crank might not take too kindly to it....... but it's your bike now.
I know it's a bit of a drive, but up here is Sarasota we have a place called Randy's Cycles. It's basically just an old guy who has a ton of old parts. Any time I can't find a part for one of my bikes he always seems to have it laying around somewhere. If you call ahead and tell him that you are from out of town he will track down the part in his shop or in the junk yard out back and have it ready for you when you get there.
i would strongly recommend against slapping a turbo on it
youll have a mess of bent and broken parts even at three psi. not to metion tuning it would be a nightmare. to me turbo bikes are only fun if they are fuel injected
You can't find any GR parts because Big Rich up there owns 19 of the 24 ever sold in the States. You should see his garage. More like a Suzuki twin museum than a garage really.
and the bike 'SHOULD' be on the road I want to find some drag bars for the bike, and a small speedo, sarasota is only ~2.5 hours from me, and it could cost roughly $5 to get there haha I love the prius MPG's
I've been reading some interesting stuff on using GM HEI modules and coils, but really the GR's ignition is pretty good. The charging system, not so much...
Anyway of beefing up the charging system?? I want to run LED's down both front tubes, and some LED's around the back, I want these blind old people to not be able to use the excuse "I didn't see him" haha
Aftermarket stator will give you some more juice. But you can also "ttransfer" electricity from the existing lights by swapping them for led lights. The instrument cluster bulbs are 194's, the taillight bulb can be converted to led, run a 35 watt H4 bulb, etc.
