Hunter S Thompson on the Ducati 900 SP

Thats great stuff.
I've been a huge HST fan for years. I got my Gonzo tattoo years before that schmuck offed himself. That was bulllshit. I kinda felt like he owed it to us loyal readers to get loaded on mescaline, fill his jeep fulla C4 and drive into a gov't building. Besides, how inconsiderate! He could've gone outside . You ever seen what a shotgun blast to head does? makes a big damn mess! Somebodys got to clean that shit up, asshole.

he used a pistol. arguable whether or not he actually intended to off himself anyway...

Im about 10-15 pages from the end of "hells angels" with fear and loathing in las vegas and the great shark hunt waiting patiently. hells angels is an amazing read, fantastic journalism with early gonzo throughout. It would be really cool is some modern author did a follow up book on the hells angels 50 years later to see how the club has aged.

HST on a Ducati 900. There are some things you can only describe as a sandwitch of awesome.

In defense of his suicide: at least he wrote a convincing note and made something out of his own funeral.

I was having a hard time getting through Hells Angels. Seemed like the same thing over and over - drunk, fights, rape. I really want to like it. The writing is great, don't get me wrong. How you were saying that you'd like to see a modern author do a follow-up to see how they have aged; you have take into consideration that Gonzo journalism is a stretch of the actual truth. It's real-life events embellished upon. That's why all the HA's were PO'ed at Hunter after the book came out. Fear and Loathing...AWESOME book to me. I'm jealous you are reading that for the first time. I remember not being able to put that down. I read that in two sittings. You'll enjoy it. You also might try The Rum Diary. It's his first novel so it's a bit scaled back as far as drugs and shenanigans. They are currently making a movie on that one, so it may be beneficial to give the one a read soon.

I would second the recomendation for Rum Diaries. Great book, even reads like a real novel.

My statement earlier was ment to have a Gonzo feel . I'm aware of the details, but chose to ignore them in favor of painting a better picture.
HST can be very polarizing. Folks either love it or hate it. Me, I love it and hate it. I love the storys/essay/articles (btw, love Kentucky Derby!), hate the boring letters to his publishers.

For those that have never heard of it, check out Transmetropolitan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmetropolitan
It's basically a comic (graphic novel, whatever) about HST if he existed in some twisted 90s-influenced future version of Manhattan.

It does a good job of interspersing political theory, humor and just plain weirdness. For example:

finished hells angels yesterday. I see what you mean about it being repetitive but the amount of true journalism he does is incredible. all the reports he sights and quotes/eye witness accounts he gets in the book really liven it up. The Gonzo bits come in every now and then (especially the last 3-4 chapters) but its generally a coherent piece. the last chapter is pure HST ranting about riding motorcycles in san francisco at 3am.

which is in stark transition to "Fear and Loathing in LV" (or at least the 15 pages I got through on the streetcar today) which is a rolling narrative that occasionally spits out important information. Its not only totally different book but it feels like a totally different author.

next Im going to get the great shark hunt and then rum diaries after that.
