The starter on my CB350K has been acting crappy, ie. turning over the engine a time or two then making a horrible grinding noise. Tried the starter clutch and found a couple of broken springs but that didn't fix it. Then I remembered the description of the planetary gears in the nose of the starter motor itself. Sure enough, when I pulled the srarter apart I found one of the planetary gears had a VERY worn bushing that allowed it to become disengaged from the starter drive.
Looking at the parts breakdowns on line I don't even see the planetary gears, bushings or anything to do with the nose of the starter. The picture shows both planetary gears and the worn bushing pressed out. Where the heck do I go to get the bushing for this gear?????
Shoot that sucks, I'd almost bet you're gonna be digging for a newish or used starter to fix that. That same starter should be the same for the 350s and the 360s and 450s possibly. I saw a couple on ebay for 30$.
As a side note, you might get lucky and take it to a hardware store or a farm parts store or a autoparts store and dig through their bins but that is prolly a LONG shot.
Well, I measured the bearing as best I could and there seems to be nothing even close as a standard size that is even close. The bushing press fits in the gear and the gear turns on a shaft in the nose of the starter opposite it's twin.
There's a salvage place fairly close by and I might get lucky with a cheap, gently used unit.
The bush seems to be austenitic steel which also happens to be nearly the same material group as your average jap disc brake . I however remember turning a piece of brass to near ID and pressing it into the hole with a vise . My friendly auto machine shop had a ream that was close .
I just love the way the Honda Manual says "The starter motor is not in constant use therefore wear to their components is rare..." Just like me to find the one in a blue freakin million that would exhibit wear!!!
Just bought a used model off Evilbay. Hopefully it isn't rare too!!
Was it full of grease? I took the starter apart on my rig and it was pretty dry. I greased the shit out of it and put it back together, cleaned the commutator and squared the brushes and it spins great now. Before it was kinda wimpy.
The bushing in one of the planetary gears is big enough to get my little finger into...but it was dry except for the graphite and bearing dust. On the other hand it might have been just bearing dust... Anyway, grease won't fix it.
Either way I'll have another chance at the elusive rare starter that ate a bushing in a few days. Wanna lay odds that this one has at least one fried bearing??? I'll rob what parts I need and this time there 'll be some grease in there when I bolt it back on. I'm gonna use some Phil's Tenaceous Grease (it's a bicycle lube).
