Over the winter I had an XS750 tank chromed for my XS650. Really happy with the 15L tank. The fuel taps are universal harley parts.
I heard getting it chromed would be expensive (~700) so went for the cheap option of polishing. THought I would clear coat if afterwards. So I took it to this place in town and had it polished. The guy who did it was not that experienced. They dipped it in acid which I didnt know that they would do and I was not happy about it as this introduced acid into the inner seams. The inside of the tank was perfect. While it was a NOS tank, I found out afterwards it was poor quality metal. It was impossible for the guy to do a good job, but he didnt realize it and just kept pressing too hard and too long. Left scratches in the tank and warping from the heat. I didnt do my research upfront (or enough of it) and I after talking to a lot of people found clear coats over bare metal are not great, they yellow with time and will get chipped allowing rust to start. Great, I had just spent a few hundred to have a great tank screwed.
I then when to the Plating House 116 Viceroy Rd Concord, ON L4K 2L8. My god the owner knows what he is doing. Repolished the tank. As he was doing it he recognised the poor quality metal. So he did 2 thick layers of copper and polished those. Got rid of the scratches and the indent. Then chromed it. Here is the result. I could not be happier. Ya it will cost you around 700. When I found out the many step process and the manual labour I understand the cost. I wish I had gone there straight away as I would have saved 300 and 2 weeks.
BTW, if you do get your tank chromed, make sure it is lined first. They fill it full of water to sink it in the acid baths.
