I can't get my grips on...

Just got my clipons in the mail today, and can only get my grips halfway on. They are the correct sizes, are you supposed to use some kind of lubricant?

I'll shoot a little hairspray on the bar and in the grip. It helps the grip slide on easy, and when it dries it sticks the grip to the bar.

or if your using the soft style grips and its a pressure thing you can make a tiny hole in the end of the grip for air to escape, or.. if its a size issue 'ID and OD' conflict i've taken an exacto blade and scored the inside of the grip to make it a bit easier to stretch.

cheers

I thought about warming the grip up to make it more pliable, but the grips are the translucent gum style and I'm afraid of damaging them...otherwise scoring the insides would be a good bet

+1 The shit in the pink can works good

If you try the "warming" technique, soak the in hot water and it should not hurt the translucent grips.

+1 on hairspray... Slick as snot for about a minute (grips just slide right on like they're greased), then when the spray dries it adds just enough tack that they won't slip at all but are still removable afterwards if you use a little Windex. if you're not a girl (or don't have access to one), a travel-size hairspray can is less than $1 usually at Target, and will last you YEARS.

There's already a hold in the end plus the BCR clipons are hollow and open ended so air isnt getting trapped in there. Looking forward to seeing the hairspray in action. I'll be sure to post pics.

What adhesive are you guys using to get the grips to stick?

If you use hairspray, no additional adhesive is needed (or desired) - that's the beauty of the thing.

Re: a hole in the end - not really necessary, however it will speed the drying time. With no hole, drying takes about 20 min. With a hole = 5 min. Results are the same re: strength and slickness when installing the actual grips. Oh, and hairspray does not seem to discolor clear grips (I've done it with clear, and once it dries it's invisible)

I've tried everything over the years, and whilst everything here "works" hairspray, detergent, lube, etc will start to slip again if it gets wet. There's nothing much worse than having your grips start spinning when you are trying to navigate your way through a torrential downpour.

Best thing is to have the grips and the bars totally clean / grease free and slide the grips on with compressed air. Never needed any glue on grips when I've done it this way either.

You push the grip over the bar about 1/2 an inch, then you point the air nozzle between the grip and the bar. The air "floats" the grip and you slide it on. Takes about 5 seconds.

Compressed air can get into your blood stream through your skin and kill you.....

Not with the types of pressure we're talking about here. You'd probably need 250+psi to get to anywhere near breaking skin and most compressors struggle to go over 120.

You'd be in more danger of contracting some respiratory disease from inhaling hair spray than getting air in your bloodstream ::)
