For those who don't know. I operate a knuckleboom truck for my livelyhood. It's a service provided by the City of Gulf Shores (my employer) to remove piles of debri from the road side.
It's mostly leaves and limbs and stuff but there's also all kinds of other things. For instance, every metal part I've made for my bike has come out of these piles. Twisted's headlight ears and Eileen's nameplate are from something I found in the trash. The seat for my 750 was made from an outboard motor cowl and some metal that I found... in the trash.
Today I found something else.
It's a mostly FUBAR 1987 Honda 125cc ATV. I've already removed the tank and some other bits that I may have use for down the road (levers, hardware, etc.). The reason I unloaded this P.O.S. in my yard is because when I looked at the engine I just couldn't throw it away.
It looks (operative word) to be okay. I haven't checked to see if it's stuck as the pull chord is yanked out, but I'm thinking about pulling it out and going through it, then tossing the carcass of the ATV. I'm thinking go-cart... or maybe full custom 125cc road bike... I dunno. It would be cool for a bike if I could some how rig a kick starter instead of that pull crank. Anyway... Thoughts? Am I thinking along the right lines? Am I a hoarder who needs to be saved from himself? Lemme know guys (and gals).
Looking at the frame, I'm going to end up cutting the superflous bits away from it and putting a neck onto it and going from there. Assuming I can get the motor free and nothing fudged up in it too bad. If this looks viable, it'll be jumping in between Eleanor Rigby (father-stepson bobber build) and my cb350 (lots of work!). I'm kind of interested in this motor. I'm also going to be looking for a tiny frame around town that I can modify to accept the motor. I still don't know about the pull chord though! That might be a little weird, I just can't decide if it's cool weird of bad weird. If I make it a bike, I'd be going for a tight little wasp-waisted package. I mean it's a 125, and I'm a big guy so it's gotta be light as hell! I've always wanted something tiny to throw around.
That is so cool dude. I have no problem at all taking someone else's trash! I don't have to tell you that people throw away some pretty cool shit sometimes.

There is a bunch of little bike inspiration posted on bubblevisor:

The pull cord is a cool weird idea but workable. You just need to make it a feature of the bike so that it's meant to be there and be seen. Not like the motor was an afterthought.
I'm all over the lost owner finds. People just get rid of so much cool stuff.
Reading Jay's comment about making the pull start seem cool, like it was planned gave me an idea. You could get one of the hurst T-handle shitfers and modify it a touch as the handle for the pull cord!
What you guys think?
Theme the whole thing as a full rat rod bobber deal. Making do with what you have kind of build! Straight long pipe on that thing would sound......well....different at least!
I was thinking more like abrass t handle! Then incorporate more brass throughout the whole thing... This is still conjecture at this point as I have yet to even cut up the atv.
Speaking of which... Twisted can I borrow your grinder and some cutting wheels today???
I'm already a day behind my wife's deadline for getting "that piece of shit out of the damned yard!"
think you're onto something twisted. I was thinking more along the lines of steampunkery. Lots of ideas there in cresentson's thread that could easily be worked into it.
Swagger, I've actually been contemplating a cafe- inspired trike done from a three-wheeler atv for a long time! This atv is just too tiny for that... On a side note I may have secured a frame for this one! More info as soon as I know that the frame is mine! I'm thinking this weird-ass build is going to jump ahead of my 350 project! Once I have a frame I can fab up motor mounts and I think I have all of the parts I'll need for the rest of the build!
You can put it anywhere but in the tracker section! Kev Nemo Tracker section judge/jury/executioner will gut you like a fish and eat you liver with some favre beans and a nice bottle of chianti!
Put it in the bobber if you don't style it cafe! Fuck classifying!
