my bike is a 76, making it an antique here in the states...which is what i have it registered as. anyway do i need turn signals? being an antique, i never need to have it inspected but im not sure if the law requires me to have signals.

the reason i ask is, im trying to trim down the bulkiness that is the controls on the handlebars ...ie: turn signal switch, MC, kill switch.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys

Hey, Im in the states too....I've been trying to find out the same thing. I've basically been told and verified in a few states if the bike came with them, it has to have them...Im in CT and my bike came with them so I'm stuck with at least having them mounted (they don't work though)

Local rules here in Ontario specify that signals, fenders etc. as originally equipped are required. Chances are your rules are the same, but you should ask.

Get the bike up and running, inspected and on the road. Then get rid of everything you don't want and take your chances. That being said, I'd say if you don't have signals etc. that meet DOT requirements, and you get into an accident where you get hurt or worse you hurt someone else, your insurance company will flip you the bird when you go to them for a claim. They'll do everything they can to avoid paying big settlements, and if your bike didn't have the right signals, brake lights or whatever, you'll be left out in the cold and whoever you ran over will own your house and your paycheque for the rest of your life.

Sad thing is I'm not being dramatic. My cafe-racer Yamaha will end up with legal signals lights and gauges, and will have a front fender and some rudimentary semblance of a rear fender.

well the way it works here is if your bike is registered as an antique...and mine is...then you dont need to have it inspected...ever

State of Illinois

I bought plates for my bike back in April 2007 and I wanted to get antique plates, but after reading the rules and regulation, it wasn't a good ideal to get them. This is what discourage me from getting them:

Vehicles displaying these plates may only be driven to
and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service
station or demonstration. The mechanical and physical
condition of the vehicle, including brakes, lights, glass
and appearance, must be the same or as safe as
originally equipped.

I see a lot of cars with these plates, but I think the police does not enforce the law on them. This rule is the same for motorcycles.
