I need a title!!!!!!!

Ok this is the Vermont way. It really is the easiest thing possible. Just got on the phone with them. Follow these steps exactly:

1. Go to the VT DMV website and download form TA-VD-119. Print it out and have it in front of you.

2. Call the main office at the VT DMV and tell them that you want to register your bike through the post. They could give a crap you live in a different state. It's pretty much free money for them.

Edit: call the Montpelier location at 802-828-2000. They are very friendly.

3. On the phone, ask them what sections of the form you need to fill out. They will ask you really easy questions to figure out what you're trying to do. Just tell them you're trying to register your motorcycle. They'll tell you from there what to fill out.

4. Tell them the make and model of your bike. They will ask you how much you paid for it. They will look up your bike in a big book of vintage bikes and tell you the book value. They charge you about 6% of that number plus the tag fee. Mine ended up being $96 and some change.

5. Ask them where to mail the form. I can't remember the address off my head.

6. Fill out the form the way they tell you, and all of the sections they tell you to. You will not fill out all the sections most likely.

7. Put the filled out form, a check with the amount they tell you and a copy of your bill of sale in the mail.

8. 5 days later you will receive your plate in the mail. A few days after that you will receive a transferable bill of sale and registration.

They won't provide you a title. That's not what it's about I don't think. They just make it legal for you to ride the bike in your state on the road. Getting a title is still up to your local laws.

Hope that helps.

I should also give credit where due. Redliner here on the forum originally told me how to do this.

Also, they don't issue titles to bikes older than 1990 or something. So you don't get a title, just the ability to legally ride the bike on the road.

Thank you very much - exactly what I needed. I would buy ya a beer if I could. I will be perfectly happy with a plate on my RD.

It was given to me in highschool by my autoshop teacher about 12 years ago. I rode it around convincing my mom it was a moped. The title was in whoevers name and was signed over by him and then my autoshop teacher who has since passed away. I lost that title in the several moves Ive made since then but I wont ever sell the little 125.

Thanks again.

No problem. They will literally tell you exactly what to do if you call them and tell them what you're trying to do.

Great!

Thanks to all this info here I will be able to ride my cb100 this summer. Vermont DMV was super friendly. Got my plate within two weeks with temp registration. Permanent is to come soon.

Run the 1986 license plate or cert number, or take the VIN # and run it at the Depart of Motor Vehicles (or what ever it's called in your state).

Which state do you live in? We could look up procedures for it if we knew.

In Ohio, you call the main title bureau in Columbus (capital) and they can do a vin search over the phone. They don't keep records any further back than 8 years. So if your bike was reported stolen in 1980 they won't know.

Anyhow, from there if the vin is clean you need to go to your county's court of common pleas to petition the court for a title. Here's where it gets tricky: each county is different. For instance, Cuyahoga county (Cleveland) you need to retain an attorney ($1000) and return to court multiple times, paying court costs each time. In Summit county (Akron, one county away) it's much more relaxed with only two or three visits and no requirement for an attorney. I only know because I am trying to sort it out with a frame I currently have.

It's tricky, but most times it can be done. Make some phone calls to your title bureau and take notes on what they tell you.
