So I am finally starting on my seat design and got some foam glued together and down to my basic shape. What I am having issues with is if the cowl is too big or not. Sometimes I look at it and it looks good but sometimes it just seems too big. I am looking for some constructive criticism. The bottom of the cowl will not extend as far down as it is right now, that is just to keep it sturdy on the table. When I fiberglass it I am planning on just dropping the fiberglass straight down the side and then once it dries, cutting it to shape. I was also thinking about mimicking the knee dents in the tank on the cowl, but I really dont want to ruin what I have so I am hesitant. Does anyone have suggestions or comments that will help me. Thanks again
Usually with cowl design, your main reference is going to come from the tank. They should look like they belong together..
That said, I don't think it's too big at all... I think that piece hanging down may be a little deceptive. I've seen some that are taller than the tank.. at that point I'd say, yeah.. too big. Another thing that might be throwing you off is the line of the tank vs the line of the cowl. The tank is a bit more gradual comparatively which makes the cowl look stockier. I don't necessarily think these should be the same shape, but those are the lines you want to pay attention to.
Here's a quick mockup of what you might expect with your current config.. (this was done in about 5 minutes so forgive the crudeness)
I like that better. I mocked up how I would like the sides to hang and the back to look. I think Im pretty pleased with it if it works out the way I want it to. I think I will also shave everything down just a little bit to make up for the added bulk of the Fiberglass.
