Identify old racing tank racer1

That big seam down the middle makes me think that its a fuel/oil tank. Not sure what its for, but some sort of endurance racer would be my guess.

I purchased it for my cj360t but it did not fit or sit right?

That's an understatement. Very cool tank, possibly a one-off.

Wow an interesting tank, I have know idea of what it is but, If you decide to sell it, let me know!

It was exactly what it said. It came from Dick's Cycle Wet or Racer 1. They sold cafe race stuff back in the day.

Twin fillers are either pure styling to imply endurance racing or one compartment may be an oil tank.

Style/shape is odd. It looks like it was based on Ducati Imola race bikes from 72

I owned an early cb750 that came equiped with a tank seat combination like this tank. i think i have a picture of it somewhere, if I can find it i will try and post it here, as I recall Dicks wasn't in business for long. I think his full name was Richard Laplante and he wrote a few books, was into the Kawaski 3 cylinder 2 strokes as well.

You have a Dick's Cycle West copy of a Japauto tank that is designed for use with a stock seat. I have the race version tank and seat that I'll be using later this year for a Japauto endurance racer replica. The attached photo is how your seat would look with a stock seat. Of course, you could also use one of our Giuliari repro or English style seats... ::) RR

Ricky Racer, Thanks for the additional info and pics. It does look very similar to the Japauto tans pictured. Do they have the dual filler caps as well? Good luck on your build. Be sure and PM me with a link if you start a build thread, I would not want to miss it.

You also state "you could also use one of our Giuliari repro or English style seats" Forgive my ignorance, Are you a parts supplier? If so PM me a link to your site/products.

Is this tank still for sale?

"Burnin' oil and smellin' royal!"

Johngofast, I am the new "owner" of the tank, so no it is not for sale.

PM sent, Frankenfe. I've also sent a link to our site at www.classiccyclecity.com/gallery.

Regarding the dual filler question. The original Japauto race tanks were developed for endurance racing, and had dual fillers. I did have one street version designed for a race seat that had only one filler, but I'm uncertain if it was originally produced by Japauto. I swapped it for a Read-Titan 3-piece fairing to use as a pattern piece.

The prime source for Japauto info can be found at http://1000vx-club.pagesperso-orange.fr/ but it is in French.

Good luck with that tank. It's a cool part buy uses early fiberglass; use a good liner. Check out http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htm.

The bike in the attached photo has the same tank and seat I'll be using and is similar to my first upcoming Japauto build. Sorry about the small photo size... RR
