If you want safe, take up curling.

Let's face it, motorcycling is dangerous and wearing proper gear can improve a rider's chances of survival in the unfortunate event of a crash. We can all agree with that. But we can't all agree how safe our gear needs to be. It's a matter of personal opinion and it should be left at that. I really don't want to read anymore posts about how old helmets aren't as safe as new ones or an armoured leather jacket is better than denim etc. Leave those discussions for the other general interest motorcycling sites, there's plenty of those to visit. This site has many members that enjoy wearing period correct apparel when riding their old bikes and some of that apparel no longer complies with today's standards but I don't give a rat's ass. Pavement hasn't gotten any harder than 35 years ago and fibreglass is not biodegradeable. So please as a courtesy to all the nonconformists here, don't scold those of us who chose to wear vintage or modified gear. We're having too much fun expressing our individuality.

FYI: For all our American friends, curling is a lame pseudo-sport enjoyed by chainsmoking, middleaged Hosers (Canadians). It's basically shuffleboard played in an ice rink and involves pushing a large, granite stone and sweeping it's path with push brooms. No, I'm not making this up.

As a Medical student with a Level 1 Trauma Center which serves a 3 city area and 60 miles of turnpike with its helipad and as a part time Paramedic I can attest to two things.

1. If I am craddleing your head between my knees while I have you bagged after cutting off your helmet with my trauma shears it makes little difference what type of helemt you were wearing. I see just as many full face helmets as I do skull caps. If you go down hard waering any type of helemt I skip right to C-spine immobilization. Then I check your ears for CSF (clear fluid). Then Onto the ABC's Airway, Breathing, Circulation.

2. If I am responding to a MVA (motor vehicle accident) involving a motorcycle and there is no helemt reported I call the medevac and have the POS (Police on Scene) find me a landing pad. On scene I grab 2 things. My pen light and my gauze bag. While holding the patients neck I check for PEARL (Pupils equal and responsive to light) while my partner does ABC's. Then I check for whats called a step-off at C4. Basically Im looking to see if I can literally feel were your 4th and 5th Cervical vertebrea have seperated.

I wont even go into the topic of protective gear. I can set a broken or exposed fracture. I know how to pack a organ evulsion. I can rinse out road rash. I can relieve a Hemathorax. I can depress. a Nemathorax. I cannot mend nerve endings, I cannot relieve blood pressure inside of your cranium.

I dont care if you are waering a PVC helemt that was spray painted or if its older than 5 years, or if its been dropped before. I look for a helmet and a back protector. Seriously, how much could spray paint have decreased the integrity of your helmet? I would be more concerned with the padding INSIDE the helmet.

Wear a helmet. DONT WEAR GLASS GOGGLES. Try to wear a back protector.

Sorry if I was too graphic, I was going for scared straight. If there are any farther questions Ill be happy to answer them. If you can picture it, I have seen it and know how to react to it. Amputations, Blunt force trauma, and launches. I know how to react to every incident. You cant control who hits you and how your body reacts. All you can control is the course of action and the number of critical injurys I can rule out while I struggle to place an airway in you while the old lady who hit you calls her lawyer.

well yuk! just kidding, I run the crash truck for our local racing group and have seen some fairly nasty things. and I sometimes ride without my jacket, despite what I've seen. ;D also had my hawk for 12 years and I've crashed it twice, luckily on those ocassions I was wearing my jacket, a Vanson. I believe we all know the risks. personally, I'm a firm believer in full-face helmets and would never ride without it, but I don't try to tell my friends across the state line that aren't required to wear helmets, what they should do. its a personal choice and they'd just tell me where to get off.... ;D

Yes, wearing DOT approved helmets while riding motorcycles on public roads is required by law in all Provinces and Territories although I highly doubt many people own street bikes in the Yukon, NWT, or Nunavit. It's like a 2 month riding season up there.

I donno... curling is dangerous.. I mean walking around on ice is just asking to fall and break a hip.. not to mntion the heavy curling rock.. that would smart if it crushed your toes...

I think everyone missed the point here.
Remember; when curling - wear steel toe boots with spikes.

P.S. Vintage helmets are cool - and after some research you'll find that as drJ said, the 5 year thing is because safety standards are ever changing - not because the helmets become useless.

Oh, and Aaron, good advice - and glad to see it's from experience. I'll make sure to keep the back pad in my armor (although I have to admit on hot days I usually just wear my 59 hoodie) and no helmet would have me quickly pulled over and given a ride home in the back of a cop car.

How about adding a kidney belt to the list... these old lowered bikes on Newfoundland roads.. whoo, what a knockin' I take heading downtown!

ooooh Noel is this you after the operation?

Oh and the Safety Patrol says, "Curling can be a dangerous sport"... especially for the fools who think drinking and curling is a cool thing to do, until they slip and smash their heads open on the ice (i see a need for helmets in curling). Not to mention the many pulled groin and back muscles that can happen. And the baffoons who sweep improperly and somehow impale themselves with the handle. Go figure.

Oh and Aaron, love the technical, medical lingo...<drool> ;)
