I've had my motor rebuilt. Put it back in the bike and found it leaked on start-up. The base gasket was too thin, So Now I'm in need of a thicker gasket. I had bought the Athena gasket kit. Only now am I finding the problem with their base gaskets. if I need to buy a thicker base gasket, where do I go for a proper gasket? Anyone have a good suggestion for who makes the right one, and where to buy it?
I got the motor back from my mechanic, installed it and started the motor. Oil poured out from in front of cylinder one and two. There was a pretty sizeable gap between the base gasket and the block.
Upon doing some research (googling..) I've found that people are noticing a difference in thickness from the Athena base gasket and the OEM gasket. My mechanic/friend has attempted now to lift the head and jugs while in the bike to avoid pulling the motor again. He's rechecked all his steps and based on a recommendation from a local Honda mechanic, he has applied a bead of RTV and then reassembled. Tomorrow, he'll torque things down and then try starting it to see if the problem is fixed.
regardless of the thickness of the base gasket there should never be a gap
Thinner base gasket, hell no base gasket, is a common modification to bump compression a bit, it just lowers the whole top end down on the piston by the thickness of that gasket (or lack there of)
