Inhale, exhale.... My GS650 has asthma.

Well, maybe not asthma but I think I could still help my '81 GL breathe a little better. I want to get more air/fuel into the engine and get the exhaust out faster (don't we all) and I'm hoping for a spot of advice.

So far, I'm looking at different intake options but haven't settled on anything yet. I do know that I want to go with a 4 into 1 exhaust and I'm thinking a swap from a GX will do the trick but I'm unsure about the silencer. I'm looking for the best flow I can get short of custom and I'm having trouble finding something aftermarket. Is MAC any good? I can't seem to find anything that isn't a chrome megaphone anyway and I was hoping for more of a canister. I suppose I could hack up the GX pipes and weld on whatever silencer I felt like but if one of you guys knows of a particularly kickass set of pipes that would bolt on or something custom you've got the info on, I'd appreciate the tip.

(I am going to jet properly with the modifications, in case anyone was wondering.)

On top of all that, someone mentioned going with bigger carbs which is something I know absolutely nothing about. I understand basic carburetor mechanics but I'm lost as to what carbs from a larger bike would do for mine. It seems to me that the size of the carburetors is related to the volume of the cylinders? Don't bigger carbs require larger displacement to effectively accelerate the air and atomize the fuel? Would looking into slide carbs instead of CV's be worth the effort? Again, I know very little about this stuff so if I'm way off, pardon my n00bness.

You don't need bigger carbs although you could fit mechanical slide carbs from earlier GS550 as they are easier to tune with pods and exhaust. 720 kit would be nice with some decent cams, the G models are tuned for low speed torque (I know they will pull from 20mph in top gearwhen running right)
Look for GS550 stuff, should be race cams around at reasonable prices

Have you considered HD OEM take offs? I have them on my GS650GLD and my bike has no problem breathing. Original everything else. Nice grunt, and not as offensive as when they were installed on a HD. Granted, I still have the original headers, 4-2 But I have seen them attached to 4-1, and seem to work and sound great, the once that were NOT puncture to get BETTER FLOW. Those only get more noise.
