i got new tires and tubes for my 72, wasn't sure what i was doing taking the wheel off so i took off the 4 nuts at the bottom of each fork leg "two per side" then realized it was too hard to break the axle loose when not held in place by anything so i tightened the right side back in the fork leg so i could break the axle nut loose. after all that i got the wheel off with possibly breaking the speedo cable. I know i probably did it all "back asswards" but i searched this site and google and couldn't come up with anything, but id like to find the axle torque spec and the correct order of operations considering the front wheel and forks are the most important things when it comes to safety. can anybody out there help or link me to some info? thanks in advance.
are you talking about the front wheel ,if so you take it off the forks the axle as a whole at each end ,one side you can put your wrench on it and the other side as a whole at the end of the axle put a screwdriver shaft throught it and hold onto the screwdriver and turn the your wrench
OK i got the tires mounted and put the front wheel back on but if i tighten the axle with any kind of force at all the wheel doesn't want to spin freely. is this normal? i know somebody told me 40-47 ft lbs for the front axle but the axle will not accept a socket so how can i get my torque wrench on there to check it? I'm supposed to be taking this thing on a 3 hour ride in 2 days so i want to make sure its correct.
The axle thru the hub should only be finger tight.....enough so the hub and backing plate dont move side to side.
Then install the wheel into the forks and bolt down to torque specs......make sure spaces on the clamp halfs are even front to back.
