installing new elec gauge cluster, or whatever the politically correct term is.

81 CB 400t
I removed the ugly plastic cluster from my 81 cb400t and purchased a new to me cluster for a 750. Its the sort triangle shaped one that rest between the speed and tach.
Before I begin does anyone know if that part will work on a 81 cb400t, given it is wired correctly? Long story short I rewired the old harness to the new gauge, plugged it in and I lost all power. I became very discouraged and drank the rest of the day..lol. I am going to check the fuses tonight, but thought I would check here for any insight, ideas or odd tales of a similar experience.

Cheers

Ok checked the main 15amp fuse and its a goner. So does anyone out there know if the elec system on the 81 400t can operate that gauge? Can I simply run a 20amp fuse instead? My elec skills be poor. :'(

The cluster is only lights. Probably the same size and number as your old cluster. you must of hooked up the wiring wrong. Green is Ground on Honda's. If you hooked up any green wires to any thing but a green wire, you may of shorted it out.

Before you do it again, check the bulbs and wiring before installing on the bike. Check for continuity with a VOM and make sure you know which is ground, which lights up the bulb.

Some of the circuit may be grounded, and have 12 V power when the switch is one, the neutral light may have constant power and the ground goes back to the neutral switch. I don't have a 750 schematic, so I can't be sure, but with a little testing, you should be able to figure out which wires belong to which bulbs. Hopefully you at least have a schematic for your bike.
