Been Around the Block
Hi I have a question to ask all you builders in the UK. Once I have built my one off cafe racer where do I go for insurance?!!!
Checking around it seems you can have 3 mods, then when you get to the end of the quote no one will insure you!
I am sure when I have finished I will have possibly 30 - 50 mods, so where do you guys go? Is ther a specialist company that handles custom stuff? Any input greatly recieved.
Thanks.
Wab.

I use Swinton Insurance's classic policy which doesn't limit the amount of modifications.

Ebike is also pretty good. I have two classic policies and one for my ZX10R with them, only one of the bikes is standard ....

Excellent idea guys - let's have your opinions on the good the bad and the ugly.

Especially the sympathetic companies who realise that we are putting life and soul into these bikes, not some rich wannabe swinging a leg over the trophy Duke, Harley, whatever to show off to their Banker [ think I spelt that right ? ] mates.

Another thing is my bike is not going to be ready to ride by my renewal date which is 5th feb. I have full no claims, what if I don't have insurance for a couple of months will the insurance companies want me to start again from scratch when I re insure?

Classic policies rarely attract NCB, but those that do should issue a statement of such when renewal is due.

The NCB can usually be held over for around 12 months on the same class of vehicle.

Insurance companies, Bankers, Estate Agents, Solicitors - all the same mould of robbing bastards. Eager [ and quick ] to take you money, but if YOU need to make a claim or need assistance its a big FO.

Just make certain you get proof of NCB from the current company - should be on your renewal notice. The NCB is no longer just that, it has become a loyalty bonus. I have NEVER had to make a claim on my insurance and since I've been riding for 45 years [ legit ] they should be paying ME to ride. But, no - I went from 15+ years NCB [ max at the time ] back to 5 years as I didn't have a continuous policy. One of my current car policies went from 18 years NCB - to "5 + ". When I asked them what happened to the other 13 years, they said "it was understood". However, when I renewed with another company the folllowing year, they stood by the 5 years..........like I said Robbing Bastards.

Ok, just did an online quote with e bike which was pretty good apart from they won't insure it if the bike isn't garaged. Arse.

Right, I am fortunate enough to have a garage so I never encountered that problem.... I would imagine that it could be a recurring one with motorcycles though depending on where you live.

Tried Swinton classic policy online which did'nt refuse to insure me because of the garage thing but if you have more than a couple of mods I have to ring them. Look forward to that...not. :-\

Buy yourself a good quality bike cover then tell them it's garaged !

Ok final result was I am insured with Swinton. Accepted all my mods and charged me accordingly. ;D Anyway it cost me £150. Not horrendous I suppose.

Without divulging any sensitive info. what age and postcode are you? Certainly doesn't sound that bad.

I am in Plymouth, which as you can imagine has some areas better than others. I would say I live just outside an area that might be considered not so nice. I am 41. :)
The final price includes legal protection which I said I did not require, I got "Ok sir you can have it half price this year" no thanks i replied. "Ok let me see sir....I can offer it to you free this year, what a stroke of luck!" Make of that what you will. ::)

I used those cute little Meerkat people and found Bennett's at £45.45 TPFT. Birmingham postcode, garaged overnight. That's for a stock Yam TR1 [ 1000cc ].

I use Footman James http://www.footmanjames.co.uk/ they are good, make sure you are clear about all alterations to the bike
