Intake Manifold Boots Aren't Cheap... Are they?

IAMBLAMB

Been Around the Block
I am looking for a set of 4 intake manifold boots/pipes for my 1982 suzuki gs550L and can't find em hardly anywhere.

Here is the cheapest deal I can find, anyone got any suggestions of where else to look?

Any help is appreciated!

The ones I need are 40mm on one side 28mm on the other and have a bolt to bolt diameter of 68mm.

So close but no cigar

Have you tried soaking your originals in wintergreen oil or xylene? Should soften them back up...

Soften them for what? They have cracks in them. If you have a cheaper way, then by all means, let me know.

$32ea = $128 :

Something to be said about twins, you only multiply by 2 instead of 4. 8)

Simmer down fella...

He was trying to help you find a solution to a problem that you didn't fully describe. See what I'm sayin' holmes?

If you need time to raise $, I've had friend coat then in POR15, that tool rubber dip, and even tape all with fair results, till they raised $. I need to start riding more Suzuki's, the Yamaha ones I've purchased were quite a bit more pricey than that.

Thanks for the help all. One thing about text is that there's nothing denoting inflection. I wasn't being combative. I just assumed you knew I wouldn't replace something if it was repairable..

That being said, I just went ahead and got them and they came with some other parts so it wasn't a total ripoff.... I guess. Free shipping was the pro to getting them off eBay. I assume everything will come out in the wash, but like my dad always said, "mind the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves."

Glad you got it sorted out 8)

A lot of people replace them because they feel dry rotted and hard as a rock and are hard to use after sitting for many years, but a good soak can cure that and save you from replacing them.

They had cracks and were not keeping a good vacuum. The previous owner widely/stupidly sealed it with fire calk. It was stupid because that junk is super messy and it's not the right way to do it. It was wise because that stuff makes a great silicone seal that is also heatproof.

It looks like he stripped the Phillips screws that were holding then on as well. Any ideas on how to get then off? My first inclination is to drimmel then into flatheads. Is that dumb?

My wife just told me that I can set the flat part of a rubber band and set it over the screw head and then try to unscrew it. It sounds reasonable. Then she cited the source of her info as pinterest, so I have my doubts. Can anyone confirm this?

Hahah the rubber band trick does sometimes work.
Best thing is to get an impact driver and go at it with that.

+1 on impact driver.

Or you could get a set of ezy outs. You will be surprised how often you use them.

Thanks guys,... I think I'm going to try an impact and if it keeps stripping them out, then I will go in with a drimmel and make it a flat head.

Rubber bands didn't work. Lame ass trick.

So the solution wasn't the impact and I didn't have to get ez outs. The drimmel didn't work so well because the flathead would barely fit and I couldn't put enough pressure on it and then twist as well. Impact wouldn't fit. Gramps showed me a cool trick. Basically you take a chisel and a hammer, angle the chisel so that when you hit it, the screw spins loose. I'm not sure why I didn't think about doing that. Channel locks will also work where they fit. I bought some hex heads from lowe's in the same size. Never gonna strip those out.
