is an Accel Supercoil 140403 3 ohm Coil a good fit for a 1976 Kz400?

In the write-up above it says that the supercoil is good for points or electronic ignitions but then goes on to say that this is only if they use "capacitive discharge type ignition systems". I am unsure as to what type of ignition system the kz400 is running and from the research i have been able to do I have not found a concrete answer whether 5ohm or 3ohm coils are preferred for points.

Beyond the "will it work" question, what are the benefits of an aftermarket coil like this? Is it worth the investment (got one lined up for ~$65 with accel plug wires)

Thanks in advance,

Adam

I don't think it'll work on a KZ400. CDI bikes actually have a CDI unit (I believe), like a CX500.

A good group to ask would be the guys on kzrider.com.

The post '80 models have cdi. But, if you get a hold of one you may as well just swap out for the 440 system, as its bolt on and go.

Also, kzriders.com and armbell.com/kz400 has awesome kz forums.

Yes it will work fine.
Is yours missing or bad? Did you test it with an ohm meter?

The one that came with the bike I purchased is the original coil so I just assumed that since I'm replacing the majority of the electronics that I should at an aftermarket coil. I'm open to any suggestions / advice as to how to proceed. I followed your advice in regards to my sprockets as well as changing all bearings, seals, plugs, bushings, etc so I do listen ;)

Only replace it if it I is bad. You'll have to test it. On the primary side, little wires from the wiring harness connect there.
And on the secondary side,if you have points the plug wires will be molded in to the coil.
If there is an ignitor/electronic ignition, they will be held on with a plastic 'nut'.
Check the plug wires and spark plug caps also.
You will need an in expensive ohm. meter from your local auto parts or hardware store.
They are about the size of a deck of cards and $10 - $15.
