Is it really worth lining the tank?

strang

yep
Is it really worth lining the tank?
Old Gt185 tank, wondering if it's worth the hassle (and expense, POR15 = £50) or I should just do the jiggy bolts thing and line it with some 2 stroke? Happy to do it properly but if for all that hassle (done it once a long time ago) vs the jiggy jiggy bolts method being enough for the tank to outlast me, well that would be one less job I won't miss.

Re: Is it really worth lining the tank? Fuel Proof brush applied pain suggestions?

DO the "Jiggy Bolt" with some local rust remover that has phosphoric acid as the main ingredient... Coating assures its junk in two years if not done perfectly

Hey Tuna, was just reading your thread about stripping:
http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=66772.45

Seems like you got pretty good hassle free cheap results :)

Just want to make sure I got the process right?

Materials:
- degreaser/Isopropyl alcohol
- phosphoric acid
- some nuts on a bit of fishing line
- 2 stroke oil mixed with a bit of fuel

Method:
- rinse tank with degreaser (Isopropyl alcohol)
- put phosphoric acid and nuts in tank, shake , leave sit, shake, rinse out; repeat these steps a couple of times.
- rinse out with water
- quickly hit it with some WD40
- pour in the 2 stroke oil mixed with a bit of fuel to "seal" it.

Any materials/steps I've missed?
Can I use degreaser again instead of the WD40? Does de-greaser stop flash rusting?

Auta do it 8)

That's the first time I've heard of tying the nuts together so fishing them out is easy. I use lengths of small link chain, does the job and easy to fish out when you done. If the inside of the tank doesn't look like anything more than surface rust and it isn't leaking, I would not coat it.

I derusted now 3 different tanks of which i lined 2 of them.
I used Wagner products (its a german firm, you find it on ebay when yoy search for wagner tankenrostung).
Its basically phos acid.its kicks the acids ass.
First degrease as well as possible with a few litres if acetone then pour in 250ml acid plus hot water.
Let the tank sit for max 1,5 days, move it now and then and the tanks looks like new on the inside.
Be sure to degrease very well oil and grease keeps the acid from working.
I didnt even had to mechanically abrase the rust.
I wouldnt line the tanks anymore, too much risk, and when it comes off,you really have to use hardcore stuff to dissolve and it will dissolve your paint too ...

Degrease-acid-rinse out thoroughly with water-dry fast-fog with 50/50 gas and 2 stroke oil :) is IMO the way to go

I wish I would have read this last weekend! I spent over an hour trying to fish the last screw out of my tank. Chain and stringed together washers is ingenious.

I lined my tank due to a pin hole leak (used the kreem kit) but I would likely have done it even if I didn't have a leak for the peace of mind.

You can also use cleaning vinegar instead of acid. Just need to dry it and hit with oil quick; I use marvel mystery oil mixed with gas, but I put in MMO first and slosh it around for a while before adding gas. I stopped lining tanks, it's not worth it.
