Well I thought I had the charging system on the 76 750 sorted with the Ricks R/R, apparently not, anyway like the title says I've had worse Sunday's : Lets see bike:check appropriate tools : check endless supply of knowledge on the laptop: check appropriate music from the Reverend Horton Heat: check Aaaand last but certainly not least : liquid sustenance to help get my mind right: check let the games begin with the electrical gremlins ,you little assholes!
chased it all the way back into the main harness and replaced it completely. buttoned everything back up , fired it up ,held 5k rpms steady and still only produced 11.8-11.9 charging at the battery. dammit did some ohms test seems stator is ok but maybe not so for the field coil(correct wording?) Oh and grounds are tight and secure!
I'm not familiar with that bike's system but typically electro magnet systems have a lead from the battery to the regulator which "tells" the regulator how flat the battery is and it uses that to regulate power to the field coil. If there's no voltage on that trace for any reason, typically the regulator cannot excite the field coil.
Have you checked the field coil and brushes? That would be a good place to start
Hey Teazer, yeah I did the tests on the field coil and the test show that is bad ,I don't have the numbers right in front of me now , but they did check on the bad side of where the factory manual says they should be
