hey guys i'm thinking of making a tray to go under my seat where the cowl is gonna be I wanna have a tray basically for my battery to sit on and to screw my coils and wiring into, but I have no one who can weld that I know of around here, so i'm wondering if JB weld would work to secure a plate to my frame and would be able to hold a battery ?

any suggestions or tips welcome, thanks!!

Re: JB WELD help?

Nope. It would probably hold for mockup purposes but JBWeld can be kinda brittle. Once you hit a bump on the road, it would come crashing apart.

Could you use small "L" shaped brackets?

Re: JB WELD help?

I'm actually going to use JB Weld to secure my battery pan in place...

I welded some brackets for my seat to sit on, so I'll be sandwiching my battery pan between the fiberglass and frame.

The JB weld will only keep it in place when I remove the seat....to make life a little easier.

JB weld is absolutely useless on a butt weld, the only time it's actually useful is to fasten a rod within a hole.

There are plenty of ways to fasten your pan though, try some bolts and strips of sheet metal...post some pics, I'd like to see what you're working

with.

Re: JB WELD help?

I'm gonna head to the gather and see if I'll be able either bolt some L shaped brackets to the frame or see if i can cut and bend some metal to bolt into the frame I'll post some pics tonight or tomorrow when I figure it all out, thanks guys

Re: JB WELD help?

Just occured to me, instead of "L" brackets, you might be able to buy / make some P-clamps. Wrap the P around the frame and bolt it up from there.

Just a thought.

Re: JB WELD help?

thats actually a really good idea think they would sell any "p" clamps at like home depot or would I have to find a special store for those?

Re: JB WELD help?

Hmmmm. I know chrome ones are used on motorcycle exhausts (JCWhitney has them for sure, probably plenty of places do too) but if you find TwistedWheels's build thread, he made some from aluminum for headlight brackets.

Should be in the $50 mod thread as well.

Re: JB WELD help?

Look in the plumbing or electrical section, you can probably find something meant to hold up conduit or pipe in a suitable size. Plan B is to head to the hardware section to get some steel or aluminum and make it from scratch.

Re: JB WELD help?

www.mcmaster.com

tons and tons and tons of ideas! they have stuff I've never even heard of, they have tons of fastener solutions just looking for a problem, probably one for yours

Re: JB WELD help?

If you're going to local big box hardware store, check with fencing, especially near the chain link. You'll find some interesting clamps there.

Re: JB WELD help?

P-clamps are hard to find in larger sizes (at least I haven't found them yet) but they are easy to find on eBay. By the time you've found some locally you'll be able to have them mailed to you. Measure the tube size and get a pack.

They're typically stainless steel with a rubber layer to protect your frame. Will work perfectly most likely.

Re: JB WELD help?

P clamps in Lowe's in the nuts and bolts drawers. I found them by accident.
