Jon-Lars and the BMW

R90S

Hello, all,

My focus has been on cafe bikes since the 70's, when I got a copy of the Dunstall catalog and wore it out, dreaming about having one of each.

Since then I became a fan of BMW airheads, as they are a perfect candidate for mods - big support network, simple and dependable, easily upgraded power and brakes, and just a bit out of the mainstream. Plus, my brother Nels had several.

I bought an R90S, and we took some trips through Canada:

It wasn't long before I bought my own R100RS, the original '77 model:

That made the R90S available for some changes. Today it has become my naked cafe bike:

I then wanted to build my ultimate BMW cafe bike. It took four years, and much help from experts, but here it is:

+1. Great stable.

I didn't realize how much ground clearance there was on a BMW (or maybe the mountain underneath threw me off!)

Awesome bikes. I have a stock (well, Boyer ignition, Thunderbird diode board, Mikuni carbs etc.) R75/6. R90S is one of my all time faves - catch much flack from purists who wanted you to keep it stock? ;)

Jon,
I'm just north of you (in Vancouver/Victoria), fellow Air Head. Here's my 77 R100:

Sort of modeled after the Rennesport.

Hmm, did I hear about this one recently? Something about a bike with anti-dive front end in BC?

Ive been all hot and bothered about SOHC paralelle twins, but these BMW bikes are starting to make my mind wander. Great build!

It's not a cafe racer withuor some engine upgrades. Here are some detailed views of the engines on these two:

The R90S has been dual-plugged, flowed heads, sport cam, modified Dellorto carbs, and modified exhaust -

THe R80G/S has had cylinders replaced to make it 1000cc displacement, has '77 big valve heads thaqt have been flowed and dual-plugged, sport can, Silent Hektik ignition, Mikuni flat slide carbs, and that custom exhaust:

This one has had the engine raised in the frame for more cornering clearance
