Go for it! It has been brought to my attention that my method, while effective, was the worst way. Use a stepped drill bit to drill out the hole. I had to make two incisions, two different sizes, to pull it off. Good luck.
Ordered the swing arm bearings, steering bearings, and rear Progressive 412 shocks. She will be a roller hopefully by the end of the week. Today the front fender got chopped and painted black. I am almost a rattle can master. I'll have some pics of the fender up tomorrow. Next week will be mounting the engine. I can't wait!
Hey jugg, very nice build love the colors. I have a question maybe you can help me, I was looking at my swing arm yesterday and I noticed that the bearing race on the side that has the two small holes behind it sat a bit off the back. Do you know if yours sits flush or is it held off about 1/8th? Thanks
I believe there is a very small ridge behind the bearing race. It probably closer to 1/16" off. That bearing was a PITA to get out. I used a pipe on top of a machine screw that fit through the hole and beat on it with a hammer until it came out. Then I used a tap and threaded the holes for future use. I'm going to be installing the bearings tomorrow or Friday. If you want, I can take pictures before I install them and give you a better idea. What are you trying to do?
I am sending the frame, swing arm and hunch of other stuff out for powder and I noticed the race and how it doesn't sit all the way back so I was concerned I would have to tap the race until it was were it was originally. I was hoping there was something for the race to sit flush with. A picture would be great sorry for the thread jack.
Swing arm and steering bearings got installed today along with a few other parts. Yes, I sat on it making engine sounds and fantasizing I was weaving through traffic at an extreme speed.
Does anyone want to do me a favor and put a dark blue color on the tank with photoshop?
Something close to this blue.
Finally a roller! Black shocks will be installed by Tuesday. Then the engine will be installed next week and hope for the first test fire shortly after that. Does anyone know if there are split exhaust holder? The piece I need is what attaches the exhaust to the head.
Hey Adam, found those led signals, new update though.........don't use them, they are hard to see in daylight. We are going to replace them on my son's bike.
Got the engine mounted last night at 1am. I had to take the front and rear wheels off and then just put the frame on the ground. Worked really well. Then I just put the preassembled forks and swing arm on to get 'er rollin' again.
Does anyone know is Progressive Suspensions sells bushing kits for their shocks? I got the rear off ebay for a Hardley but they don't fit snugly.
Hey Jugs,
As per your request... I put my PS skills to work to try to replicate the metalic blue without compromising the distinct lines of the tank too much, it was hard to preserve but this is what I came up with bro:
Thanks Slice. I want your color but everyone says it's too many colors. I'm on the fence about it. You did a great job I couldn't come close after 4 hours with PS. What's your vote?
Red and blue are hard to use together... Both are dominant colours.
My vote is go with a gun-metal (somewhere in between brass and silver) and that would look sharp!
Your frame/forks being red mean you need to use a more neutral colour on the tank... Thats just my 2 cents.
My colours is candy blue (white base coat)... Im glad you like it!
Its your decision though bro, your whip! You need to love it, who cares what other people think... when its roaring down the road, I am sure it will look amazing regardless of what colours it is!
Even a khaki colour, like an off white would look sharp...
Silver. Too many colors fighting for attention. Or try White with a stripe of some sort. I built a few TD3s with Red frame and white tank with almost matching red stripe down the center line
Installed the dash lights in the headlight bucket. Just cut the wires one by one from the old dash and soldered them to the new lights. The one in the center had a small resistor for the LED. In my violent ways I managed to break the lead off trying to strip the insulation. Went to the electronics parts bin and got lucky with the same size but different wattage and even more precision. It's nice when a failure becomes something even better than before.
A trick to mounting them is to place the washers on the sticky side of painters tape and measure how far apart you want them. Once they are stuck you can attach the tape with the washers anywhere on the surface and adjust until it's prefect. Then I used a small drill bit, centered in the middle of each washer and scored the headlight bucket so I knew where to drill. Didn't take too long and it came out pretty straight.
I have decided on the tank something like this: The knee dents and under side will be red the rest will be black. I think it will bring everything together perfectly.
Thanks Slice for the perspective I hope I didn't waste too much of your time. No blue on this ride. I'll save the color for the next bike.
Thanks. It's a good thing I found this place for all the ideas and inspiration. I wouldn't have given up but the build would probably be a lot less interesting. It's your fault that I want a Shorai battery now. I also like the way you did the leds on your tail of the cafe fighter thing.
