Just a saftey reminder while you guys wrench away

Screwed and Tattooed

Been Around the Block
I wittnessed my neighbor/friends house go in flames last night . he and family are all ok and made it out fine . he was replacing a fuel pump in his car in his garage/basement that sits under his home . the gas fumes were ignited by the pilot light on the hot water tank . my house is built the same way and ive worked on my bikes on plenty occasions with gasoline present in the same manner, which i will never do again . i never knew how quick and brutal fire can get out of hand .
wrench safe guys

Glad to hear they are ok. Sorry to hear about their home though. Thanks for looking out for everyone man. Anything we can do to help them out?

Be careful of incandescant work lights also. Like your traditional shop "droplight"...

These types of bulbs burn very hot, and can ignite gas fumes as well.
I remember reading about a guy who burned down his garage, with his sweet '69 GTO Judge inside, because the droplight he had on the ground near the car ignited the fuel spilled while replacing the fuel pump.

That sucks but yes things like that happen all time, we tend to forget what is around us. Our office building was being rehab, the general contractor all of a sudden disappeared, a week later he comes in and tells us his house went up in flames, he was kind of embarrased to tell us the reason. It so happened he was lying those commercial tiles that require a very flamable glue to apply, he wanted to surprise his girlfriend by fixing the basement, the water heater pilot picked up the fumes and all hell broke lose.

yikes! ill keep this in mind... again... can we do anything to help the family out?

i work in my basement, but the water heater/ open flame is in a seperate room closed off, so if it were to ignite the fire would be retained. the brick above that room is 5 layers thick. but i have had close calls using MAP torch and having stray fumes from different sprays (such as wd-40) in the room.

be careful men...
