K&N Filter for CB550

Been Around the Block
Hi Folks,

I recently completed a project on my CB550 that I thought I'd share. Honda no longer makes the air filters for these and I've never been happy with the foam ones that are our there. So this week I took my OEM filter unit, which was totally clogged and in need of replacement anyway, and I used it to make myself a K&N filter. I tore out the paper element from the OEM filter and disassembled the frame, which is just glued together. If you're more carful than I was, you can get the paper element out without disassembling the frame, but mine was ready to fall apart. I used a wire brush to get all the dry adhesive out of the joints. Then I used half of a DU100 K&N filter. This comes as a cylindrical filter meant for a Ducati and it's exactly the right size if you cut it into two equal semi-circles. It's exactly the right width 2-7/8". Before I attempted to glue it into the frame, I made sure I used a K&N recharge kit to clean all the oil out of it. I used the same recharge kit to re-oil the filter after all the glue was dry. I used strong construction adhesive for the metal to metal joints and 100% silicone for the silicone to metal joints. I then clamped it with a combination of clamps and rubber bands - whatever it took to keep everything tightly in position. It's much easier to glue the two ends of the filter to the centre frame member, let that dry, and then put the sides on. I also made myself a new gasket from a sheet of 1/4" neoprene. No more buying air filters! I hope some of you will try this project for yourselves.

I have done this sort of thing too, although I used much cheaper 'donor filters' myself.
You've got yourself a nice looking bit of work there, good to see someone using their head to come up with innovative solutions. Hopefully your adhesives are fuel proof. I hope it does the trick, let us know how it works.

Thanks. Yeah, the silicone is obviously fuel resistant and the PL Premium is the same stuff I used to repair this filter a couple of years ago and it had no sign of wear when I pulled it apart a week ago. Provided you give it the proper curing time, it's virtually indestructible. I know what you mean, though. The air box is not a place you'd usually expect to find fuel, but with the crankcase gases being recycled back into it, you do get a lot of fumes getting in there. When I tore the filter apart, it had smell of fuel in it.

I went the opposite direction, found a K/N adapter kitt and installed it. Replaces the filter box that attaches at the back of the air intake, keeps the plenum intact.

Looks like this

Haven't done much with the bike since but it does run and seems to be ok with the jetting for just general testing and shop work. Waiting on parts and time to make it rid-able.

Wouldn't happen to have a link, or any details on that K&N adapter kit?

I bought the adapter secondhand on ebay, I've known about them since the 90s when my buddy put one on his cb500, I bet they don't make them anymore. I see one for sale on the bay now but maybe an email to K&N might shed some light. Seems like a product they need to start making again.

Overall its not that hard to make just piece of flat metal with a pipe of the correct size welded to it. Took all of 2 minutes to install.

If there's a k&n part number on the box, the number can be searched on the k&n website. Is there a part number on the box that you can share with us?

I've been looking for the complete kit for a while now, all I can find are pictures of it and used parts. Not about to pop over 100$ for this either.

Maybe one of you wizes can do something with that pic.

Dualitymike, have you had a chance to run this on your 550 yet? Interested to know how it works out, great looking mod.

Thanks Bootsey. It runs perfect with stock airbox, jetting and exhaust and I'll never have to buy another filter.
