Kneeler Project

Ok so here's some throw away approaches, of course this is the offside view, the chair is on the other (correct) side, as opposed to the wrong side as favoured by y'all ;) the chair will obvs offer additional opportunities for structural integrity.

IMO most of the proposals are a solution looking for a problem ! LOTS of work to get the rates, rise, etc. sorted - that's after you've overcome the practical solution of making the various mountings strong enough.

The ONLY configuration which gives ANY support to the wheels spindle area - yep you gussed it - the twinshox ;)

Personally I'd opt for the "Curvy Frame Loop" + twinshox.

I agree with you about solutions looking for problems, the pictures were explorations.
However I'm still not convinced on the aesthetics of the curvy triangle.
Had an idea while out riding this morning that I'll put to paper.
I am also conscious that I want to make a visual statement with the rear mudguard in the deubel style. For which I blame you.

So I think I'll be rebuilding the back end along these lines:

More along the theme: the last two photos are interesting solutions.

just had a 16-3.50 brand new road trials tyre come in if its any good to you

Hi Miffa, Happy New Year! Thanks for your message, when you say road trials, what is the tread pattern?

This is probably the most definitive modern take on the kneelers of the era. A certain Mr. Windle will build you one for a sack of money. 8)

Just look at those tyres !!!!!! ;)

sadly - not sure ..................

The front is almost certainly a Dunlop sidecar race tyre the same as my ex. Kirby castoffs.

The rear looks as if it might be a new version of same.

I'll check with my pal Ben Kingham who races in several "Old Timer" series and could certainly ask the question around the paddocks.

A little bit of research has come up with Heidenau 3.50 x 16" K29 SIDECAR tyres - and they're road legal - at least to 100mph ! ;)

On E-Bay around £70 each. I know that's a bit heavy, but Dunlop Sidecar tyres are now in the £175 - £200 range - EACH.

Here's the E-Bay # 121705265411 for the Heidenaus

Freaky, have just sent you an email with a link to them ... £40 posted!

Hi Miffa, it looks like I've just purchased a pair of those heidenaus for the usual RRP of one, but thanks for the offer anyway, much appreciated.

I scored a rusty old length of 2 x 1 box section from a friends scrap pile, so I've cut it up, blasted the corrosion away and starting to shape them up as gusseting for the swinging arm pivot.

I got one side of the swinging arm mount gusseted, took most of the day shaping the critter. Other side should be much faster as I took a template.

Much lower profile, will increase the amount the wheel base can be shortened by the rear wheel axle placement.

Now I know what to use if EVER I get that far !!!

BTW - are you going to put a triangular gusset on the face of the s/arm bracket to the lower transverse cross tube?

Currently a weak point given your plans !

Only if you draw me a picture!

Steff,

I hope you don't think I'm poking my nose in too much !!

Sketch on it's way later today

TJ, the advice and guidance I received from yourself and crazypj built me a very safe and sweet handling beginners trials outfit ..... This little puppy is much narrower, much faster and going to be subjected to far greater dynamic loads .... I feel very lucky to have the sounding board!
