Last week I started my Cafe project on my 81 CB650C Fun times. I started with a clean good running machine but the paint was chipping on the tank so instead of letting the rust leak in it was time for a makeover. I fealt the need to dent the tank because the clubman bars would not fit the right way other wise and would dent the tank anway. Earned turning clearance !! mudded it up sanded it down and painted it. The decals prettied it up. I did fiberglass a cafe seat and cowl over the weekend but still in process of finishing it with mud and paint. for right now I dont mind the older seat I kinda like it! Let me know what you guys think as this is my first time. also was thinking of doing the sillver part of the rim & dents... red?
Did a little more to my Bike. Still has that Bobber sit to it though, not sure if thats something that I will want to change. Maybe when the seat is finalized it will make it look more cafe like. Any suggestions on this riding angle ? Should I change something ?
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
Longer rear shocks, lower the front end (going to have to use clip-ons or get different forks for this), lower the headlight, ditch the googly gauges. I'm working on something similar with my 1979 CB650 but it is a standard CB650 and isn't as Metric-Cruiser-ish so I had less work to do.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
So upon listening to the advice from you guys ( which I really appreciate) I decided to change a few things here is a mock up what I was thinking. Don't know if I'm coming out of the cafe look maybe getting a lil bit into making a bobber, But trying to go with what I want it to look like and not worried about classifications. Let me know what you think.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
Dude I'm with ya on the lack of classification(sp?). I like the mock up/paint scheme. Not too sure about the dents on the tank, but It's your tank not mine. Are you running baffles in your mufflers? Hows it sound? Thinking about doing the same to mine. I'm gonna do up my seat this week, order lights this payday. Hopefully, be riding before the end of the month. Good luck, great build.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
I have a question, do you have a lot of air in the forks? I bled the air out from from my forks and the front dropped about 2-2 1/2 in. Thinking about running thicker/more fork fluid to stiffen the front end back up. Any input from you guys that know better let us know. I am in the same boat as this guy. Not trying to jack your thread. Sorry.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
actually Ray I haven't messed with the mufflers yet I like my street bike sound that my cb650 makes right now. Eventually I'm thinking of wrapping the pipes. As far as the forks I have not tried to remove or add any air or fluid to them they are in good working order and wasn't sure about how they function so I wasn't gonna tinker with them. The paint job is not mocked up the only thing that's not done that I mocked is the back rim and the red seat. The picture below is my inspiration of how I'm styling my cafe/bobber cb650c.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
We have great taste! I wnted w/w tires on my bike but the Shinko 777 w/w were on backorder for like a month and a half. Maybe next time. I actually like the paint on your bike. Was thinking about flat for mine but my tank isn't quite straight enough.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
ditch the signals and lower the gauges. i wouldn't do the tank dents for the bars, doesn't flow with the tank on that style, knee dents would probably look good though.
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
The dents are not photochopped they're in the tank already. If I wanted to use clubmans with that tank I had to dent it because there was not enough clearance for turns. The paint, decals, front rim paint and bars are not photoshopped the back rim paint is (gotta get to it). I Just fabricated the metal pan that I'm gonna cover with red leather so i'll post an update when I'm done. Thanks
Re: CB650C Cafe Racer like project! Suggestions for my next move please!
Compared to the bike at the top of page 2 does the bike look better with this small cowl or just with the clipped frame end?let me know how about the back rim should I paint it red like the front rim or paint it black or do both rims black ? any suggestions would be much appreciated .
