Kz1000 82 not starting. Will crank but no start

So I went out to start the bike since it sat for two months. I charged the battery so I know it's good

So what's going on..

It will crank over for maybe 2 seconds then it will make a fast tapping sound.

So I will release the start button and it will do it again

It has always done this since I got it a couple of months ago. Once it starts it runs great. Just the initial start.

I was thinking clutch starter ?

Sounds like a poor battery or poor connection somewhere, that fast tapping is probably the starter solenoid cycling due to low voltage. Try hooking up a good booster battery or a car, and see if that changes anything.

I tried that last night. I noticed little puffs of smoke coming from something near the battery.

Check your ground wires.
The starter circuit takes positive from the battery through the solenoid to the starter, but the negative side of the circuit is via the engine case itself via the thick ground strap from the block to the frame and back to the negative battery strap. Make sure all those connections are good and clean (both positive and negative).

Did you have the car running while you were jumping the bike? If so you over charged it
and burnt something. Check the battery voltage with a multi meter. Should be around
13 volts.

Just did a quick look around and everything seems to be in good shape

What to check with a multimeter?

I'm an idiot when it comes to anything electrical . :'(

Volts. Turn switch to 20VDC, red lead to + on battery and black to - on battery.
Should read around 13.00 volts.

.

If you do hook up a car DO NOT HAVE IT RUNNING.

It sounds to me like a low charge in the battery, as The Jester said it is the starter making that tapping noise. Try a different battery.

EDIT: Well that was a late reply. Teach me to go out to lunch and forgot to hit post.

Yeah before I posted all I saw was the first two posts.

Check the earths for the starter, engine and battery. If they all check out good and are nice a clean and have good contact to the frame you should be right.

Depending on how much you like electrical shocks you could always try bridging the starter solenoid, just make sure there is nothing to catch on fire around.
Ohh and that standard "I take no responsibility if you are injured in attempting this" crap.

If there was smoke coming from somewhere wiring related while cranking chances are pretty high that you have a lose or poor connection somewhere.

Do a voltage drop test like this.

Put your multimeter on VDC 2v scale or closest. negative test lead on the battery terminal negative, positive test lead on the starter motor, attempt to crank verify less than 0.3V registers on the meter while cranking.

If the reading is higher, you have a faulty dirty or loose connection in the ground side.

If the reading is less than 0.3V test the positive side like this.

Positive test lead on positive battery post, negative test lead on starter terminal, and crank the engine, same as with the negative side take a reading while the system is under load.

If the reading is below 0.3V the positive side of the system is OK if it is higher you need to start looking for faulty dirty or loose connections.

So today I tried to start it again and the bike was trying to start. It was for a second then shut off. A puff of smoke would shoot out of my k&n pod filter. Weird.

Your battery is NFG. That hammering sound is not enough voltage available to keep the solenoid energized.

Also when I put the positive side on the battery and the negative on the starter motor I get 0.0
The 0.0 is what you should get, but try it on the 2V scale on both positive and negative circuits as I explained previously.

Hook up a booster battery, or vehicle. It should crank over normally and start.

That is the engine turning back very slightly from compression when it stops. Its normal. not weird.

We'll today I got it to start. I didn't do anything but pull it out of the garage. I had it hooked up to the Spair battery. I checked it without the jump and the battery was at 10.50.

Gunna get her a new battery hopefully it'll solve everything.

Thanks !
