KZ400 Gauge/Panel Lights ??

Ok, I searched and didn't find the answer, so I am hoping this isn't a duplicate question!

I really don't want to put the original gauge cluster back on my KZ400 (it came with the bike along with other random parts), so I was curious. Anyone know what the gauge/light combo is in the second picture, or if I could just mount LEDs on the original bracket and hook them up?

Electrical has not been my thing, so this is new to me! Also, the original wiring harness is out of the bike and the PO just wired in what they need. So I have to splice into it it appears, for things like the lights on the gauges (I'm guessing at night now)! So any help or suggestions you can offer is greatly appreciated! :)

The little lights are often referred to as 'dummy' or 'idiot' lights. They tell you things like you're in neutral, your signals are flashing or your high-beam is on.

Not particularly necessary unless you want them there. On 99.9% of bikes they don't complete any circuits and are not necessary (I say 99.9 because on BMW airheads, there is a charging light that is actually part of the circuit and rumor has it if the bulb burns out, the battery no longer gets charged :p).

Gauge lights are important if you look at your gauges at night, or if you live in an area where your bike has to be inspected annually and/or if the police are unusually particular when you get pulled over.

All that being said you should be able to replace the dummy lights with LED's - lots do it.

Loads of us run the mini speedo / tach gauges with black or white faces sold by Dime City Cycles. I have them on my XS650. Your stock speedo and tach cable will thread right on and you're off to the races. They have lights in them as well that should just plug into the existing locations inside your headlight bucket with the bullet connectors.

Ooooooh I am so going to buy those!! And I don't think I'm required to have the light since a speedo isn't even required, I just like it because I have a 50 mile round trip to work and I live I a rural area, so the highways and most of the roads don't have lights, but lots of cops. :p

What year is your KZ? I just finished one (76) I dont have as much knowledge as Tim :) but the bike is fresh in my head and if I can help I will. BTW Tim, nice to know about the battery light. I fell like we will be talking a bunch in the future. haha
