KZ440 LTD jetting for aftermarket exhaust

danker16

Been Around the Block
so I wasted $80 on PODS and a Jet Kit, for the KZ440 with the CV carbs.

I installed UNI pods, had stock 35 pilot, shimmed needled up 3 spacers 55mm each, and first tried 102s; lean, 107s:lean, put 115 mains ok. all based on plug chops.
on this bike my mileage on a full tank was 175km... i thought this was ridiculous so I'm getting rid of the PODS.

however, I do have the mike XS commando exhaust on the bike.

stock mains are 85. 70 primary and 35 pilot.

i can order 90 and 92 mains from the dealer as they are still active. i been told i'll need to replace the pilots also because the engine burps on when you let off the throttle.

what do you guys recommend for this exhaust? I have a grey dyna coil and will be reinstalling the stock airbox.

thank you.

3 spacers? 55mm? What was mileage before? Number of turns on the idle screws?
Does the primary resistance on the Dyna coil match the stock coil? How is the
compression and valve lash? Does the bike roll easily?

sorry needle shims each .55mm , mileage is 17, 400km. stock turns on the IDLE screws is 2.75 I have it at 3.5 i believe.
dyna res is 2.2 ohms, range taken from from the manual should be 1.8 to 2.8 ohms.
the right cylinder was 142 PSI, cant remember left. valve clearance 1.7 to 2.2 I have it at .19mm.
bike rolls easily.

That all checks out. Shims equal about .064 in., which is not a severe change.
As for mileage I meant m.p.g.. What 'kit' did you buy?

6sigma jet kit

With the stock air box start with the stock jetting. Do you have the whole
air box? Including the piece I have never seen personally that attaches
to the back.

I have everything, it will start but will run lean with stock jets, when I replaced the mufflers, both plugs were clean white.

Today's gas does burn cleaner. Does the gas contain ethanol?
If it idles fine try shimming the needles and compare the plugs.

shim it some more? what about top end for the mains.
no clue about the gas Im in a pretty isolated area in eastern Canada

I honestly had enough and want to go back to stock airbox. if I was on stock jets, airbox, whats a good starting point for a jet swap for the aftermarket exhaust modification?

riding season is done over here, i spent most of the summer we got trying to figure this out and im not doing that again next year.

I apologize, I meant with the air box, stock jets and shimmed needles.
A young man here had some problems with his bobbed LTD. His air box
was missing the filter housing and was using a piece of foam. Turned out
the foam was more restrictive than stock and reducing the cross section
by half worked great with the stock jetting. And he was running stock
head pipes and free flowing mufflers.

so I shall go back all stock.
thankfully I replaced all carb screws with allen heads. i can now replace everything while on the bike :D

actually, like I said when i replaced the mufflers and ignition coil she ran hott even with the stock airbox. so I am just going to order slightly bigger mains, stock is 85, will order 90's and 92,s just in case and once thats fixed it will be the end of it with these carbs.

also what kind of modification would require one to run colder plugs on these old bikes?

Most of the stock mains I've seen have been 88s, some 90s.
Colder plugs are used when the machine is worked hard.
The plugs will transfer heat to the head quicker to keep the
plug cooler. Which will allow carbon to build up quicker
if there is not enough heat in the combustion chamber. A
hotter plug will cause preignition if there is to much heat.
