kz440 ltd TRACKER!!!

1982 kz440 bought in decent stock shape about 23k miles. had a big wind screen, sissy bar, king/queen etc.
got a free 78?? kz650 parts bike a few weeks before, so i swapped over bars, shocks and took a few things off, and this was the first way i rode it:

put it on a diet, changed the wheel/brake setup using the front wheel and rear brake from the 650. had a spacer machined to make the sprocket location/bolt pattern work (no cush drive).

bought some rear sets on ebay from an 86 honda hurricane. dime city flat track bars, hella 500 driving light, small headlight bracket made. led tail light off my supermoto, half assed exhaust redo with hangers (not permanent) to clear rearsets
. shorai battery and box to fit.

fiberglassed tail using my wifes gsxr solo cowl as a mold, trimmed seat foam, recovered in vinyl, shinko 705's, painted wheels, pod filters and lots of carb tuning.

everyone that says these cv carbs cant be tuned are a little mistaken. mine arent quite as responsive as the fcr on my supermoto, but its pretty damn good. especially compared to the stock airbox.

i'm at sea level btw

incase anyone else is having trouble with tuning their cv carbs with pod filters/no airbox heres what i've got... all from jets r us.

- 45 pilot jet for en450/454. i used a 4mm .75 tap in carbs, and die on jets, seated and sealed no problem but do not overtighten. had to sand the head of the jet just slightly to fit in the hole. used the 454 jets as i couldnt find anywhere to get the 440's. i'm about 1 3/4 turns out on the idle screw.
-75 primary main
100 secondary main (will be trying a 105 to see if it improves, kinda feels like it may. had a 92 in before and its worlds better with the 100.

i clipped the vacuum piston springs 4 coils and enlarged the bleed holes slightly to improve the mid/top end response. it feels pretty good, but may play around with larger holes, shorter springs if i can find some spares.

i'd guess its right around 300lbs, but will verify when i can. feels awfully light. ton of fun to ride, will be doing suspension upgrades in a few months when the weather gets shitty again. anyway here it is. lots of clean up/ painting to do, but it can wait for bad weather.

Nice job. When did WA get collector plates for motorcycles? Hmm, lots of Douglas Fir trees, I'm betting you are, let's see, you said sea level... somewhere between Olympia and Bellingham...

I'm originally from out there, stinky little rat hole meth lab "town" of Graham...

not sure when they started, but if its more than 30 yrs old you can get em. just south of olympia actually, Rochester.

thanks everyone for the comments. its been getting a lot of looks the past few days. would be cool to see someone local with a similar build.

My uncle was the principle at Rochester a long time ago... and my aunt still owns a farm in between Oakville and Chehalis. If you run into an old friend of mine named Jeurgen (daughter worked at McDonalds, he drove a big red KW sleeper for Graham Trucking last time I saw him), give him a swift kick in the ass...

hey man, love the build, that thing looks like a blast! i'm wondering how it's treating you with no cush drive in the rear any more? any negative effects from not having one? i'm thinking of running a set of wheels on my latest build, but there's no cush drive while the original wheels had one, so i'm trying to gather info on whether or not it's a good idea.

Love that Hella 500. Wanting to do the same thing on mine. Curious how difficult the wiring was. I heard it can get pretty complicated. Any chance you could post a pic of your wiring? Would really appreciate it.

Hell ya, glad to see other LTD's having a new purpose in life. Check out my 440 LTD build sometime. Finally about to wrap her up.

Woow!! It is bad ass!

Where did you get your rims from and what type of tire is that ??
It's in the write-up: KZ650 front in place of the OEM rear; Shinko 705s.

Hey Zap2504, I do have a Kawazaki KZ 250 LTD 1985 with strap with drum brakes. I want to change the rims on it. What would be the easiest solution to upgrade to 18 inches ? currently it has 17 inch in front and 16 inch at the back.
Thanks

Why is that ?
18" is same size as the old classics (looks more authentic as a scrambler or cafe racer); 17" is same as modern sportbikes (lots of tire selection).

However, 19" front is still used on some dual-sport bikes (e.g., Suz DL650/1000 V-Stroms) and can go over larger road bumps/obstructions better.

Easiest will not be the cheapest. Easiest will probably be to send both your (bare) hubs to Buchanan Spokes (http://www.buchananspokes.com/) and have new 18" aluminum rims (in your desired width) laced on. The KZ250 has completely different axle sizes from the larger displacement bikes.
