Lacing wider rims to a CB350

Well Im getting closer to completion. I will soon have to work on the Wheels. I would like a little more rubber under me. The CB350 stock set up doesnt really do it for me. Can I lace up 2.5 wide rims to my CB350 hub? Are all 36 spoke wheels copatible with 36 spoke hubs? What is WM3? Will I have to stay with 18s to avoid "custom" spokes?

Question 1: Anything can be done, it's just a matter of how much work you're wiling to put in it. In this, it's a fairly easy swap. I'm guessing you want a wider rear wheel? The only possible problem is chain clearance. I have no idea how much space there is between the chain and tire on a CB350, but I'm quite confident that won't be an issue.

Question 2: Yes, with a few exeptions. On a tube type rims, which everyone else except the cast-rim-guys and I are running, you can always go wider. Changing the rim diameter also changes the angle of the spoke-holes in the rims (imagine putting a 12" rim on your current hub vs a 21" rim), BUT if you're sticking with the 18"s this won't be an issue

Question 3: WM3 is 2.15
here is a good chart on the issue http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/WheelTab.htm

Question 4: Yes. I have a link to a spoke-length calculator somewhere if you're interested in going bigger/smaller.

That would awesome. Please post the link if you have it. On another note can the thread on the spokes be cut further down the spoke to acomadate a small (diameter) rim, and then the excess trimmed off. Al this info wil help alot, escpecially with the hardtail I hope to build.

or

somewhere under this link, couldn't find it now. ???

If you're thinking about changing to 17's, I don't think there's enough thread on the spokes. But then again I could be wrong. I suppose you could turn more thread into the existing spoke, turned threads are not as good as the original ones, which are sort of...forged (my english isn' at a sufficient level to explain the scientific theory behind this). Hope this helps.

I see what your saying. The original threads would be stronger, and messing with that might be dangerous too, so I'll probably stick with the 18s. No worries your English is better than mine. Thanks thanatos I look up the link. I was about to buy a rim but found ot ome of my old ones is wider than the others. :)

On another question: Does anyone know the best place to get spokes for my cb350(disk front/drum rear) in th USA?

Don't waste your time,, the chassis will flex more than a Vegas pole dancer,,big tyres weigh more! lace up XS 650 rear rims front and back(wm2 1.85) and stock honda spokes work fine!......and cheap

Hey Todd can I use two CB350 1.85 rims, or is there a reason why you recomend XS 650 rims? Are you running this set up? Can I have some pics

Are theyt stock alloyst? If so NICE very nice. Will have to shop around. Any one have two XS650 rear rims they want to let go of for cheap ;D

Later model XS650 rims are shouldered alloy, which look like Akront rims. They're 18" rear and 19" front. I'm running the 18" rear rims on both front and back of my project XS650.

I'm doing this because a) I like the wide look and b) I'm running a drum brake up front. The angle on the spoke holes in the rim are different for the larger drum hub than the smaller hubs on disk brake wheels. I had custom Buchanan spokes made, ordered from East Coast Wheels. Just tell them the hub and rim you're putting together and they do the spokes up right.

The stock 19" rim is drilled for a disk brake hub, so it doesn't lace up to a larger drum hub properly.

These are my rims all done up with fresh Avon Roadrider tires.

BTW www.mikesxs.com now sells these rims new for $89 each and he ships for free to the US and Canada. For brand new polished rims this is a great price. You might find used XS650 rims for about 1/4 to 1/2 the price, but will likely be complete wheels.

Where are you located? I think I have one more 18" rear wheel kicking around in the garage.

geezzisis I had to sport some dark lenses to look at them ;D..very good work ..some lads stick the xs 650 drum on there cb 350"s

Tim I'm all the way in San Luis Arizona, Wayyyy south on the border. Your wheels are great. I like the front drum too, but I have installed a newer triple tree and my drum axle is too short. Though I never checked if I could just switch my axle.

Buchanan's is the way to go, but I was hoping to stay away from such an expense. Do you think the XS 18 will lace up the a cb350 front disk. I like the look your running.

Thanx WeeTodd you sound like your really into the performance roots of Cafe's . I really dont plan on going crazy fast on this thing really, I think ;), which was the selling point with the old lady and the kids.

Tim did you find that rim in the garage? Hit me up with a figure for it if your willing to part with it.
