Lean/Rich Carb Conditions

braaaaaaaaaaap
Without going into too many specifics I am trying to pin point down somethings and one of the which is right now my bike I can get running with the choke on. This is a Mikuni VM32 and when I turn the choke off the bike dies.

Now I've been doing some reading and the general consensus is either something is plugged/dirty or this can be a condition of too much fuel?

you need a bigger pilot jet or it is plugged, fuel level extremely low ?
slide cutaway effects off idle throttle
do you have a bleed type emulsion tube needle jet?
why, though you want to beat your head against a wall for poorer running and less power is beyond me

I'm not going to get into the whole single vs dual carb debate. I was looking for some general advice because the bike ran fine last year when I had it going and didn't require the choke after starting.

All I'm wondering is if what people say is true.

check the pilot jet it must be partially fouled
take it out blow through it and look through it to the light
