LED turn signal problems

So im trying to put amber LED strip lights on my bike for turn signals and I've come to a road block. The bike is an 81 gl1100, it came from the PO with no turnsignals and lots of electrical problems. I have sorted out all the other problems exept the turn signals. I replaced the thermal flasher switch with an LED compatible relay and I got the dash indicator lights to flash correctly. However when i flip the switch for the turnsignals they wont flash, no light at all and the multimeter says 0 volts. But when I turn off the turn signal the maker light comes back on with 12 volts. The relay seams to be functioning fine as i can hear it click on and off with the dash indicator light flashing as well. Any ideas?

Make sure the polarity is correct on the LED's?

I did, and even double checked with the multimeter to confirm. The indicator is on the same circuit as the markers. The market just turns off when the indicator is turned on instead of flashing. But the relay clicks on happily and shows it is flashing on the dash bulb.

I may go buy a cheap 12v bulb and see if it makes any difference

Strange that the indicator light flashes, but not the signals.

It might be worth double-checking that the flasher relay is correctly installed. No load relays are polarized and need to be installed on the correct wires, too.

Sounds like you're not wired through the correct circuit. If the dash light is flashing your flasher is working. Idk about your bike but on mine the signal gets 3 wires. A ground, a hot for market lights and a hot for turn signal. In order to use this arangement you need dual filament bulbs. If the led strip you bought isn't a switchback then you can't use it as both marker and turn signal if it's wired how I think it is.

But the OP should still be able to use the LED strips ONLY for turn signals if the strips are connected ONLY to the turn signal line and ground. He could then connect a second set of strips (or something else) to the running light line.

To the OP: do you have a wiring diagram to help you out finding which color wire is which circuit?

Yup.

On the Hondas, the solid color wires are for the signals and the ones with the white stripes are the running lights. Orange for left and light blue for right.

Couple of things you can check...

With the tail light disconnected, and assuming the positive wire to the tail light is led+ and the negative wire is led-, and the battery ground is gnd.

Both with the flasher connected and with it disconnected..
Measure... led+ to led-, led+ to gnd, and led- to gnd

Couple of notes..
With the flasher off led+ to led- should be 0V
With the flasher on led+ to led- should fluctuate, depending on the meter you might not see it go all the way to 0V or 12V but you should still see if move.

If the flasher wiring is anything like mine the led- to gnd should always be 0V and led+ to gnd should match led+ to led-

Post up the results and we can see if everything makes sense..

Cheers
