Linux?

Hi All,
Just installed Linux 'Mint'
Going to have to learn some stuff but it's only taken about 5 mins to install and get here.
I'm pretty amazed it's so easy, when I tried it about 3 yrs ago it was no where near as simple.
The hardest part was finding software to burn an ISO image to disc (still using Windows XP)
There's already a newer version out since I downloaded this one, I think Windows is going to be obsolete when more programmers start either porting old stuff or writing software directly for Linux ;D
Going to have to fix screen resolution though, everything is BIG
Get open office on here with it and I'll be 'golden' ;)
Anyone else testing it out or using Linux?

This site runs on Linux :) Ubuntu 10.04. But no GUI for me - all command line stuff.

I've used it a bit, used to run DNA pyrosequencing data through a pipeline that required Linux command line To interpret millions of short DNA sequences.
It's amazing what you can do with a computer :) even more so what you can do with the processors from hundreds of linked computers.

But daily I use a Mac. Nothing is better for day to day use IMO.

I already updated from Mint 7 to Mint 10. 8)
Mint 15 is out, going to have to put it on a flash drive and boot into it though as it's too big to burn as ISO image on CD ;D
Dunno why but things seem 'better' in Linux than in Windows? (maybe Firefox works better?)

I experimented with Linux about 4 years ago - I was introduced to the Linux world via Ubuntu. I remember struggling to get the OS to run flawlessly on my laptop, it took many of nights of playing with different codes, etc. But the payoff was worth the hassle.

They've made installation and operation of Linux so much easier now. Ubuntu is my "go to" platform for Linux... I'm not sure how it is now, but 2 years ago I struggled with Linux Mint and getting it to play nice as I had did with Ubuntu.

PowerISO is a great free program (spam and virus free) for burning ISO images to CD/DVD - that is, if you are still looking.

I ditched Windows a few years ago when I switched jobs and we are a MAC only company - although we still run windows applications via "parallels" - I love my MAC and would only replace it with Linux since the two are relatively similar.

Linux doesn't have all the bloatware that Windows is riddled with - things run smoother and, I feel, Linux takes more advantage of your machine's resources.

I too run linux. I started with experimenting on a laptop that is almost 10 yrs old with lubuntu. I now run linux mint on my desktop and love it. The hardest thing was getting my wife to a point where she felt comfortable using it, especially when it comes to office type documents, getting her to save it as a word document or pdf. now she even likes it, it is a good OS. we still have a laptop with windows but I would ditch it in a heartbeat!

Hi Tim,
I knew severs mainly run Unix/Linux but didn't realise your command line only but I guess your coding stuff so point and shoot mouse use won't cut it ;D
I'm going to dig out some of the old stuff I have and make a Linux 'box' to play with
Looks like I won't be able to do much for first 3 weeks after back surgery so learning something new should keep me pretty well occupied 8)
Plus, I know know who to bug when I can't work something out ;)

Yep, been running Linux since about 1995'. I run Linux Mint 15 on my work laptop and home pc. Debian running on my firewall/router. Many, many server builds as well.

Glad to see another convert.

Been about ten years since I've touched 'nix. I'm a .NET programmer during my daylight hours, so I usually don't venture too far from Microsoft land...

Sonreir - for you. :)

Don't even start me on cookies... This one time I battled a cookie issue with saving a user's username and it took like two days to figure out...

it really is a lot easier to do these days. I remember loading up Gentoo one week.. it literally took DAYS to do. Following all instructions.. compiling my own kernel... the whole works. hell apt-get update world took hours on its own... had it all up and running and then..... the power went out to the house without the proper shutdown commands.. bricked everything. In hindsight.... I might have been able to recover... but I had no idea what to do at the time.
