Looks like I will be out of commision for a while..........damnit

Swagger

Putting boot to ass since 1967!
Got my bell rung this afternoon.
Was facing a 4lb slug of 6061, an operation I've done a thousand times when the lathe jaw let go and launched the work piece at my head. I don't know why, maybe it actually broke. Would be interesting to know the velocity of impact, but my left cheekbone stopped it from flying across the room. I don't remember the actual impact, but found myself sitting on the floor covered in blood.
Laid my cheek open (literally) from my lip to just under the eye.
Didn't realize it till I got up and took a.peak in my inspection mirror, cut thru my cheek and could.see my teeth thru my face.

Neato

Internal muscle stitches plus some inside my mouth, some more outside and some for the upper gums just for good measure and I'm back home. Vision in my left eye is blurry but more than likely from swelling......I hope.

No real reason for this post except to distract myself until the pain meds kick in. They haven't done shit thus far.

So you math wizards out there.....
5" diameter, spinning on axis at 5200rpm, flying approximately 20 inches at roughly 45 degree angle.......how much force was the impact?

Fuck, hope you get better fast man. Glad to hear it wasn't worse.

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. i hope the pain meds kick in soon and that you have a speedy recovery. Keep us posted on your progress.

Now, let's see who is the first to say " Quit whinning, you had it coming" LOL ( I know someone is thinking it)

But seriously. I know you must be in a LOT of PAIN..

Oh shit man that sucks. Glad you got my pieces out before this happened. haha, just kidding bro. Damn man sounds really bad and I'm glad it was no worse. Hopefully the sight will return to normal. Dude you are going to have one of those tough guy scars that only tough guys get. My neighbor Jim has one now. Its those character things. I wouldn't mind having one but I'm too much a puss to pay the price hehe. On a serious note, don't be afraid to call the doc and ask for something stronger. Hang in there brother

Holy crap Lee. Hope you get back up and around soon. Anything we can do for you in the meantime, just say the word.

Forget the science and the math- we call that a "shit ton" of force.

Get well soon, Swagger. Sorry to hear about your misfortune but you know what they say- it's hard to keep a good man down.

Wow man. Im glad to hear your still breathing. Hope its a quick recovery. You have my number if theres anything I can do homie.

It could've been WAY worse - glad you got away with both eyes intact. I don't think I would've wanted to see myself in the mirror after that. Good on you for keeping a level head.

Do they make full face helmets for machinists? ;)

Swagger,
I'm sorry this happened to you.....jeez, what a freak accident! As Tim said, "It could have been a lot worse!" Though I'm sure that's small comfort now.....I have plenty of experience with that wait 'til the pain meds kick in stuff...really sucks! I hope you can recover fast....I really enjoy your sense of humor and your posts!

Damn Swagger!
I don't know how much velocity it had, but 4lbs wouldn't take much to pack a hell of a whallop.
Aluminum cuts are notorious for getting infected, second only to bronze. If the doc didn't give you antibiotics, kick his ass and get some.

Now that will be a scar that chicks will dig! I hope you get full vision back soon.
As a grumpy old toolmaker that can still count to ten ; ) I know how fast things can go to shit, while working with machinery.

Oh yeah, ask the wife to stock-up on those drinking straws that flex about 2/3s up. Drinking anything will be a challenge for a long while.

I assumed you were using a 10" chuck, that it probably bounced off the outside jaw. So a rough estimate would be 260 feet per second.

Wow Swag, glad it wasn't any worse! Not that it wasn't bad...

Using 4eyes 260 fps, I'm getting 5,252.7 foot pounds of energy. Ouch.

But hey, on the bright side, meet any cute nurses? ;D

I did the calculations and the resulting force of impact = HOLYFUCK!!!!!!! + or - a sheeeiiittt!!! Hope the pain meds have kicked by the time you read this. You are a lucky bugger or a hard headed bugger. A lot of people haven't survived that sort of accident. Hope everything heals up quickly.

I'll add my amen to all the get well wishes.

Re-read the "Missing motorcyclist" tale ...................... ;) ;) ;) ;)

Im no genius, so this is most likely completely wrong but,

velocity=distance/time

since we dont have time, im going to supplement it with rpm (don't ask me why)

it ends up as 260 which i assume is mph, so 260 mph.

also, hope you get well soon, those gum stitches must hurt like hell.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

haha, that was completely wrong my bad, the equation I used was, 5800/20 (divided)

which comes out at 290mph

Good lord, Swag...

You are one of the toughest sonsa bitches I have ever met. I wish you the speediest of recoveries, sir.

Am I the only sicko that wants to see pictures of the carnage?

Jesus man. That's horrible; it really is. Of course you'll heal fine because the human body is amazing. But I feel for you just the same.

What happened to you is one of my bigger fears. Fabricating in the garage is dangerous. I always worry when I'm alone. Face wounds like yours hurt like hell and bleed like crazy. But what if that hit your throat? Crazy world.

wow, that sucks man... hang in there, enjoy the meds... and no justin, you're not the only one.
