Loud Engine cb350

Okay so here is my dilemma. I took my bike ( 1971 Honda cb350 ) over to a friend's because a gasket was leaking and he was going to help me change them out. Well low and behold you have to take out the engine to do so we decided that it would wait for winter. So when the bike's top end was bolted back on and torqued to spec we started the engine and it seemed as if there was clanking coming from the top of the engine. So i suggested that it was the valves but my friend said he made sure the valves did not get readjusted when the top end was put back on. So what else could be making this noise? Also the right pipe sputters every once in a while if that is of any help.

re-adjust the valves and timing chain ::) but you need to find somebody that can do it :-\
oh and kick that guy HARD in his 2 nuts and keep him away from your bike

hmm Would i have to take the engine out of the frame to do this?Is there a good thread on valve adjustment? I would like to do it myself as i always enjoy learning something new. Also i hear that you can readjust your valves while the engine is running is this true?

the factory service manual is what you need
have you ever used a feeler gauge ?
the valves are adjusted on a cold engine , at least a few hours after running cold
you dont have to take the engine out
i adjust my valves every oil change, around 1000-1200 miles
sometime sooner
and it is a very tricky adjustement to get right, much more tricky and difficult than a tappet with a screw and nut at the end
there were old school race mechanics that did it with engines running
it is not something you can even begin to do
and don't even attempt to ride the bike until the valves are adjusted correctly
good luck if you are real handy you may be able to learn how to do it
