Just picked up a '79 750k... with a little research I've realized it might have been better to go with a little older 750, by about a year. There doesn't seem to be much prefabbed '79 cafe parts so I'd better get to work on my own. Any advice? I know there aren't a lot of DOHC guys out there, someone must've been in my boots at least once.

Thanks

Welcome.
I know there are not a lot old DOHC Hondas but the Kawasakis have been using an extra cam and leaving the Hondas in their dust for ages. ;)
Post up some pictures of your CB.
Finding parts that are made to fit can be a little tricky, but that's all part of the fun of building a bike you can call your own.

One of the only good things about Maine, is the fact that all bikes must be yearly inspected... so you aren't really going in blind on a purchase. I've been researching rearsets. They seem to be the most pricey upgrade from the start. I have body work experience, so the tank and tail should be easy... but the rearsets, not so much. Any advice on where to start?

Welcome! The bike looks like its in decent shape. Lots of folks here fabbin' their own rearsets, so hopefully someone can help.

yeah it's in pretty good shape, I don't think she's gonna like what I have to do to her at first. I hope I can get some rearset assistance. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but it kin of stops at metal fabrication. Plenty of body work experience. I hope someone on here starts selling fabbed up rearsets.

Thanks for the look.

Rear set discussion is always on going, they pretty much always need to be fabbed. I bought some from ebay, and didnt realize how short shift and brake arms were, the things are pretty much useless. Even they came just a block of aluminum to make up mounting parts with.....far from bolt on. Keep checkin!

Is the 79 frame not straight across the top tubes like the 78 and younger?? I wonder if you can fit an older CB tank, if you dont like the 79 tank that is ...

I'm not sure Gribbs,

From everything I've read, I'm pretty much only compatible with '79-'82 without some work. I'm not too worried about the tank, I'm just going to bang the shit out of it until I get it to look like I want, same with the rear end. The rearsets are the only thing that I have absolutely no comprehension of. Last night on ebay I order what were suposedly rearsets from an '81 cb750 super sport. I assumed they would be the closest to a direct fit as I could get without going aftermarket, but I think I just bought the first of what will probably become a giant mound of shit parts. Here they are, you tell me!

Hey Jared......I have never seen rear sets that look like that, but I am newb in the caafe and bike game in general. They certainly LOOK period specific at least. They almost look like the shift arms (are those shot gun shell look alikes or somethin?) could be mounting very close to the pegs, just like the shit set I bought. I am guessin someone will pipe up and help you more. I will do some lookin around online and see what i see

thats a pic of those big brackets on an 81 ss but i dont see them placing the pegs further to the rear? hmm

Gribbs,

I see what you're saying from the pic you posted. I'm not sure if they're going to work at all, but atleast hopefully some part of that setup can be used for fabbing something up. I sure as shit hope someone on here starts fabbing up rearsets at a DTT discount.
