In the continuing quest to create a swiss army bike the thought to make the stock tank work (cb450 k7) and a lowbrow axed 2.2 gal tank as well is in my mind. I have both tanks sitting around collecting dust and while I tear back into my cb I have decided to look into this option. Now the stock tank is obvious how it will work...standard ears up front and a rubber mount in the rear. The axed tank however has mounting tabs that go on top of the backbone of the frame. I currently have a similar tank mounted as the axed tank. Ive run an althread into the frame, so a wing nut holds the tank down. This won't work if I want to change the tank to the stock tank and still being able to go back to the axed tank. I suppose I could drill a larger hole into the backbone and weld a bung in and just a bolt to hold the tank down instead which is the most likely option, but I'm writing in here to see if there's simple options for this. Maybe like that bultaco that was recently on bikeexif (bolt up front and a strap in the back)
yeah it does. It is the way to go since I don't have to think any further on it. Still would be cool to see other options in case something pops up better. I just get a kick out of the stock tank essentially sitting on the frame being held down by a bit of rubber. Seems so flimsy, but it works.
That third tank up there has me rethinking my entire direction through. I might go with a 5 gal one of them and wear a fuel bag as a reserve/jacket.
What about a Manx style tank strap that goes all the way from front to back with a toggle latch? I made mine from a scrap of stainless from the salvage yard and a $8.00 latch from McMaster-Carr. A piece of rubber to keep it from rubbing the tank (and rubber underneath to keep the tank from rubbing the frame). I can have the tank off the bike in less than a minute. Don't know how you'd account for a larger vs smaller tank, maybe the metal strap could un hook at the oppisite end of the latch- A shorter strap for the little tank and a longer one for the big 'un.
