I am looking for opinions. Will a Manx style of seat look alright with this style of tank?
I was intending on running the fiberglass tail section in that picture, but am not coming up with a goo way to mount it and make it look like is is supposed to be there. The XS frame is too wide towards the front to fit the tailpiece over the framerails. I could cut the fiberglass, but started thinking maybe the Manx style seat that Clubman Racing offers might look better. Looks like they offer it in a longer version w/o the oil cutout. Just having a hardtime picturing it. I've already removed the rear fender and do not intend on putting it back on. Open for other opinions also...just trying to keep things on the cheaper side and really cannot afford an alloy tank.
Your bike and the way that seat fits it perfectly is the whole reason I am considering it! LOL My bike is a '73. The fiberglass tail piece has the look I wanted, but I am afraid it won't look right on my TX. The frame rails are too wide for it. I was thinking the wide, longer manx w/o the cutout might fit better. But figured I would see what others thought of that seat/tank combo...
Manx style seats are personal favorites, nothing looks better. Make your own, there several threads on this forum to do so. I made a cutout one for my Triton and full ones for my CB's.
Less than $40 for resin, cloth, marine vinyl. Find a sewing machine, spend a few hours of your time, drink some beer and you shall have exactly what you want.
The price actually isn't bad on this one, so I would probably just get the complete seat. Looking at the picture you posted, I think mine would be very similar...minus the rear fender. Wasn't sure how it would look w/o the alloy tank, but I'm likin it!
the Manx might look a bit strange without the rear fender. Just my opinion. However I recently put one of the bobbed rear fenders from a 650 special on my 72 XS650, dumped the rear frame loop and installed a repro Lucas tail light from Mike's Xs and it turned out quite well, even if I do say so myself. As for the Aluminum tank , I'm seriously thinking about doing what Malifone did and have a tank ceramic coated in aluminum color at a powder coater. From the pics he posted it would be damn hard to tell the difference!
At this point I have no plans (or the mounting points) to run a rear fender. I may do an inner plate between the frame rails like you'd find on a race bike to keep crud out of the carb area, but not likely a full fender.
It's not all that thick - probably only an inch or less.
You can see how I've mounted mine in these pics. There is 1" thick closed cell foam on the frame, with an aluminum plate sitting on it that holds the battery etc. The 4 studs in the seat pan bolt to this plate.
The seat could sit lower, as you can see in the final picture. I wanted some room under the seat for my rectifier/regulator, ignition switch etc., and the 1" foam provides more seat cushioning without making a big puffy seat.
Does the seat wiggle and move a lot mounted on foam like that? I am hoping to mount the seat low on the frame, but my 750 tank has a cutout on the back I am going to need to address. You can see part of it in this pic of another XS with the same tank...could always just block the hole off like this guy did:
Hope I'm not pointing out the obvious here but probably the most important thing to remember is that if you have a short tank you need a long seat and if you have a long tank you need a short seat. The Manx seat usually comes in two lengths short and the longer 15" pan.
