Masking Tape Residue Burned unto Muffler Removal

Pretty self explanatory. Previous owner for whatever reason has masking tape on the chrome I didn't see, rode a couple of miles and its burned into the muffler. Short of scraping it with an exacto knife and scratching it, any chemicals come to mind that will remove it without hurting the chrome?

goof off?
mineral spirits?
Lacquer thinner?
buffing wheel?
Brass wire wheel?
emery cloth?
Aluminum foil?

Chrome is hard, you aren't going to hurt it.

anything abrasive will scratch the fuck out of it so yeah nix the emery cloth, same goes for scotchbrite no no no
steel wool wont scratch it as long as it is very clean, try the chemical approach along with 00 clean steel wool

Soak a rag in MEK and apply it to the affected area. Leave it on there a bit and rub the crud off. Wear chemical resistant gloves and avoid breathing the vapors. MEK is a very volatile solvent, in case you don't know that already. I have used this method to remove melted rainsuit, melted bike cover, and melted shoes from my chrome pipes. MEK does the trick without doing any damage.

Do NOT use any powertools like a buffing wheel or anything that spins...it will produce heat that will smear that crap all over your exhaust.

Had the same issue with some mystery gook on my RD headers, used a brass wire wheel to get rid of it.
