Wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm thinking about making the move from Victoria BC Canada to Montreal for the Mech Eng Tech course at Dawson.

From what I can see online, rents are pretty reasonable, but not much in the way of included garages, basements, or dare I dream, workshop space. Anyone got any tips about finding a place, Dawson College, or just the town in general?

Good places for beer, food and live shows and favorite rides would also be of great interest.

Seriously? 57 views and not one comment?

Kinda ominous. Is Quebec gonna turn out to be one big baby-eating colony of aliens?

I had planned on going to a Motorcycle Technical School Until they told me it would cost $30,000....after I heard that I just bought a broken bike, my own wrenches and did the learning in my spare time...I still don't know everything but if I have a question I ask it here and get more help than I have gotten from College profs. in the past...Not trying to rain on your parade but what I have said is true...Nowadays I owe zero dollars and have 7 motorcycles (traded up from a cell phone for some of them)

Montreal is a great city though I took a trip there a few years back and had a great time...More bars than you'll know what to do with

Thanks DesMoto. By the way, I saw that trade up to the mc you posted, made me smile, well well done! :)

The program is pretty cheap, I'll qualify for tuition grants in my second year, and I'm looking forward to the CAD courses. It was going to cost me $5k+ /yr here, it'll be about $3500 my first year in Quebec and much less for the 2 final years. I'll be working and paying cash for my schooling, got into debt trouble when I got my first cc at 15, never again.

I totally agree with self study, got my Bookkeeping certification that way and learned more than I thought there was to know about my ride by paying attention when folks that have the knowledge care to share.

My gf has family back East and marriage and kids are on the table so it's time to get an actual future cobbled together. I figure a few years in Quebec and then hopefully back here to the West Coast to hang my shingle.

Montreal is a great city. Don't know anything about Dawson, but I'd love to live in Montreal. Especially if I was a 20 something college student.

Thats not a bad deal CAD is great to know as well... Best of luck to ya hopefully some one will chime in and know more about Dawson than Tim and I

Whats'up! myself I study in mechanical engineering technology it's my last semester but in a french cegep , in Montreal, Dawson is pretty dam in downtown so cheap housing is not possible near the school.Work space is not easy to find for a decent price, usually people prefer to loan their space for storage only. Metro/bus pass is a must because the school is 30 seconds from a metro and parking is a bitch. The mount royal is a cool place to chill in summertime especially the Sundays. I have learned a lot through this program milling, lathe, manual stuff, then manual programming on the cnc, metrology, cad drawing from auto cad, solid work to catia and more!

For all the artistic stuff and gigs you have the mile end, plateau neighborhood during summer the town is filled of festivals like picnik electonik, jazz fest ,heavy mtl, osheaga
Motorcycle wise the plates cost an arm and a leg unless you plate it vintage wich is what I do for 80$ (600$ for a regular 600cc/year) but your not allowed on roads higher then 70km/h and no highway(but I cheat this rule). The night life it montreal is pretty nice don't worry about that bars !

Ya jeunemotard is very right. Apartments around the college are gonna be expensive. I can recommend however, if you do decide to come, to continue your studies at Concordia University. They have an amazing engineering program.

As for the city itself... I don't know if you'r familiar with it but ridding on mount royal is incredible, my brother and I made a day event out of it there is so much to do for fun. If winding roads is more your thing then a few kilometres out of the city there are incredible twisties :p

Hope his helps good luck with school :)

P.S. Let us know how it turns out for you

Best part about Montreal is that Mount Tremblant is only an hour north. Some of the best riding roads in eastern Canada.

Thanks Guys, this is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. Might have to invite you for a beer when I hit town, maybe go for a ride sometime.

Sounding better and better!

Don't know anything about Dawson College. Our son lives there and is into the music scene there. He loves it. Very European in flavour ( he's been to Europe many time with his music.) and multinational. Lots to do at all hours of the day. in all seasons. So much to see, so much to do. I'd like to live there but too old. BTW, brush up on you French, speaking or at least trying to speak it will go a long way with the locals.

French is a must culturally but you could live all your life in montreal without knowing a single word of french, but why limit yourself??

I took French Immersion for 9 years in school, but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Hoping it'll come back to me fairly quickly. My girlfriend is fluent, so that should help, I hope. :)

YoungBiker is right, you won't need French there as much as in Ville d' Quebec. But, as he said, it is good to have so learn some, broaden the mind. In my experience, I have found Quebecers speak very fast making them difficult to understand sometimes and I speak French as I am Acadian. With you living there, you'll pick it up quickly and so will your gf, the speed that is.. It use to be; don't know if it still is; the second largest French speaking city after Paris. Enjoy the city, it is a great one.

How do you say $10 per dance or 'how many was that' in French? ;) I love Montreal.

Even with my broken grade 10 Franglais, it's still useful getting around. In the summer there's a great flea market north of Montreal in St. Eustache. Bought many bike related items there at very low prices. And don't get me started on smoked meat sandwiches and poutine.

Hey, I live in MTL, (as you can see in my nick name ...haha) I don't see why not to study in Montreal, it's a very nice city, not too big, so you're not suffocating, yet big enough to have all kinds of different (I mean completely different) neighborhoods and cultures. If you want to go out, there is an infinity of bars ( I go out a couple of times a week since I was 16 (I'm 23) and I still haven't been to half of them), Montreal is also a nice place if you like to eat well, as there are a lot of good restaurants.

For a nice bike ride, you can head west to ste-Anne-de-Bellevue or Baie d'Urfé, there are nice roads along the side of the river, going around Île Bizard is also a very nice ride.

Cheers
