Mikuni Carb help

Hi all.

I've just started my bike again after almost 3 years in the shed. It will run and idle with the choke (enriching circuit) on and idle normally once warm but if I open the throttle it dies (doesn't matter if choke is on or off). I can get it up to around 4000rpm with very small slow throttle opening but not with load on the engine.

I've pulled the carb and am waiting for WD40 to do its work so I can open up the carb. With my finger down the inlet the slide initially did not want to move then sprung free with a little pressure. I don't know how fast the slide should respond but to me it seems to be dropping back down very slowly. From fully up the slide takes about 3 seconds to return to fully down so I am thinking the problem is a sticky slide.

I will open and clean the carb later today. What should I do about the slide apart fromn cleaning and is there anything else I should look out for?

Bike is a suzuki gn250. Carb is Mikuni BS34SS according to shop manual. I can't find anything about the BS series on the mikuni website but they are a round slide carb with the throttle cable turning a butterfly between the slide and the engine and the slide operating by vacuum.

This is my first time working on a bike carb so any tips would be appreciated.

All opened up now. Diaphragm looks ok - I can't find any holes. Some crud buildup in carb body but mainly clean. Float too light to be full of fuel and doesn't make a sound when shaken so probably no holes in it. Needle valve and seat in good condition.

In the barrel the slide runs in there are some patches or either deposits or corrosion and the slide has a gritty feeling to it. I will clean these up and reassemble.

If it is corrosion in the barrel do I clean it out with fine (800 wet + dry) sandpaper?

Do I lubricate the slide when I put it back togeather?

Dont sand it, dont lube it. Clean it nicely. Clean out all the jets. put it back together, ride into the sunset.

Thanks mate.

Cleaned it inside and out with kero and a toothbrush then dried and flushed with compressed air. Good as new now.
