When to the local bike yard, Bill's Bone Yard, to buy parts for my XS. This bike was sitting by the gate. They just got it with no title. It is complete and stock. I gave bill $200 and took it home. It is dirty but otherwise sweet. the battery is dead but it shocks the hell out of you when it's kicked over. About 120 psi compression and the points look brand new.
I torn it down and the engine is now on my kitchen table.
It's really gross.
added 5" to the swing arm,
and it looks perfect. I love that the shock angle now matches the frame.
He is the helmet I am painting to match the bike. These are the colors it will end up being.
What are the dimensions on the tube that you used to extend this? This looks really cool, how did you decide where to cut and what did you use to make the cut?
Thanks!
The revised shock angle will make a significant difference to the way they work. At a rough guess they will feel about 1.5 times as stiff as they used to ( I need to check my logic there).
The shorter (effective length) shocks will drop the back end and increase rake so it's harder to turn and more chopper like in its handling.
I also hope that you are a certified welder. I'd hate for that swingarm to break.

I think I used 1.25 tube with 3/16 wall. it has been a while since i purchased it. I cut it in the section that was the closest to straight, which was almost right to the axle. I welded a rod in between the ends before the cuts and checked everything with a level before and after. I made the cut with a hack saw by hand 'cause i fell I can keep it straighter that way and you lose very little material.
Don't worry about the welding. I am certified and so is the guy I had tig it. And it is sleeved.
Stiffer shocks you say? I am also not to worried about the stiffening of the springs. This will be a commuter doing 10-15 miles a day not a racer. My last bike had a metal seat so this is going to be caddy soft. haha. That one you can see here.
No other huge plans after the swing arm. I mostly want to get it back together and ride it! I need to get one finished quick and it wont be my XS. It's going to be a while. Here's that build CLICK HERE!
Very Cool! I've got a 350 I just started into... sorry if i missed reading this, but has all the paint been spray? I know you said rust-o-leum, but is that the case?
Thanks and i'll be watching this build!

yep. all rattle can. on the tank used a primer/filler first then wet sanded to 400 i think. then a few coats of orange and wet sanded it to 1000 grit. scuff the area for the strips with a scotch-brite, spray the white then when it drys scuff that with scotch-brite then clear and wet sand.
