Ok, been "lurking in the closet" long enough, i have my build over at Hondatwins, but figured it's about time i share on here too. Great stuff on this site too, just a bit more broad.

So I'm a bit a ways into my build and hopefully almost done. at least with my initial restoration. so here's the condensed version of a build log. for more progress etc check out my full thread history over at: http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7290

but I'll be updating on both sites in the future. :D

Bike the day i got her:

Soon after brought down to frame, you know the usual lol:

Motor after soda blasting and paint:

Frame after same treatment:

and again tank after blasting, i had picked up a replacement tank since the one given with the bike from the PO was off a 350 something and didn't quite fit, i wanted the original tank.

wheels getting the same treatment, everything getting some love pretty much.

my very happy cold engine first compression reading:

her first start up, midway through re-assembly

and finally caught up, to where she's at now, in the middle of my seat fabrication, it's gonna be a carbon fiber seat. progress on that will be coming soon i hope.

Future plans include a BCR euro light in carbon, some electrical upgrades including stator, leds and ignition. and figuring out final exhaust. And probably going to be polishing some bits like the side covers.

Thanks for looking, feedback welcome.

Nice build so far man. Looking forward to seeing some more progress. Oh, and welcome to DTT!

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build

Update:

Ok carbon came in, and i put seat on hold for a bit to do the tank first, since it was ready for it and i still need to work out the seat.

Mini tutorial on wrapping:

Kit was pretty straight forward, my only gripe is the "tack" time on the supplied epoxy, says "few hours" and it ain't lying lol. so its coat, wait 3-4 hours coat, rinse repeat. So its very slow going. got spoiled i guess with the poly resin I'm using with the fiberglass, which sets in like 30mins pretty much.

Step one, Black epoxy base coat:

carbon026.jpg

Step two: once "tacky to touch, but not coming off" the careful application of the carbon.. (i fudged it up a little with the odd shape and cap interference lol) but all in all it came out as expected. Didn't take a pic of it, but should cut out your carbon before hand, i used an old t-shirt cut it up and laid it over the tank to get shape and cap positioning, i used that cuz i wanted something about as pliable as the carbon fiber and not just paper that would crease and not give shape good. then you lay your pattern over the carbon and cut it out. When laying it out on the part work from center on out, forming to all curves and crevasses and then cut off excess.

carbon027.jpg

Step three:

Immediately after you laid the carbon you can add your first coat of clear epoxy. just mix up as instructed and brush on. from here on it's just brush on clear, wait till tacky, brush on another coat, repeat for 3-5 coats so you have some good meat to sand, polish and finish. i'm still in on the 2nd coat as of this so about 2 more and I'll start sanding and finishing. i will be finishing off with a clearcoat of urethane for nice finish and UV protection.

As she sits now waiting on last coats :p

Ok that's it for mini tutorial on this, gonna update in a few days when it's finished. and then start all over on the seat lol just finished pic on that i suppose :p

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build

Sweet, man. I love carbon and thought about doing this to my bike. Can't wait to see how it comes out.

Progress update:

Tank wrapped and ready for clear coat, just finished wetsanding. Mocked it up on bike and am now trying to finalize graphics for paint.

Getting closer, gonna be working on seat rest of week to get them both ready for paint.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

I kinda like the unpainted look. But I'm sure you'll come up with something worthy.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

I must say it looks outstanding.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

Super job on the tank!
Great minds must think alike - I just finished "wrapping" the tank on the 175 Honda twin street tracker I'm building, to match the carbon fiber Viper-style dirt track seat and the little headlight cover / number plate I've already made.
My layup was a lot like yours, except for starting with a ply of 6 ounce 'glass, then the CF and then finishing up with a ply of 120 weave (2 ounce) 'glass, which becomes invisible when saturated with resin. I'm using a 282 weave CR (plain weave) but from the photos of your tank, it looks like you're using herringbone weave, which is a easier to drape. Didn't notice what brand of epoxy you're using - I'm using the MGS system from Germany, which is a top-notch product but bloody expensive (certified for aircraft repairs in Germany).
I've still got a couple of coats of epoxy to flow on the tank and then I can block sand and clear coat. As far as other paint, I'm just running a simple metallic silver speed stripe (skunk stripe) along the top of the tank, to match the stripe on the seat and headlight cover. Haven't decided about anything on the sides of my tank - but it's pretty tiny (from an XR75 Honda trail bike) compared to yours.
Again, super job on the layup - I'll be watching your build.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

west systems epoxy resin is pretty nice stuff. That's all we use with kevlar or carbon fiber in our canoe shop. I wonder if anyone has done something similar with a carbon/kevlar weave? the yellow and black look really nice together.

I've used their resin with fiberglass and it works awesome. The pump system makes getting the mix heck of a lot easier than measuring by weight.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

seems kinda odd to use epoxy with fiberglass as opposed to polyester resin. Were you using matt or woven fiberglass?

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

Nah. Epoxy is awesome. It doesn't smell bad, remains a bit flexible after it's cured, and is adhesive while you're working with it. Epoxy also has inherent strength.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

Absolutely, the only reason I mention poly is that it breaks down the chemical bond holding the fibers together so that the whole thing can be shaped more easily. If you wanna make some really indestructable shit try laying up kevlar or kevlar/carbon weave using urathane resin. That stuff is really impressive, a friend made a whitewater playboat out of it and it held up better then royalex or any other material ive seen.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

First off thanks guys for all the kind words, I'm really happy so far with the results. I'm an industrial designer by trade but I'm still a novice at this hands on lol. But it's coming along nicely, pays to do lots of planning before hand and as very well stated in these boards prep work is everything! That being said I'm honored, most of the work if seen here blows me away with your mechanical knowledge and ingenuity at getting things done, very creative builds pushing limits on 30+ year old designs is amazing. Just sharing my little build that has been influenced by countless builds here.

On the materials, I was very tempted to use the Kevlar/carbon weave as it's visiually striking and one of my favorite. I just couldn't justify the extra cost, make a viable reason to use on this little sear for strength or want to be married to the color scheme of the black/yellow although I love the look. I do need to find a project that would give me a reason to use it though lol :p

Working the seat tonight and on through tomarrow, my friend has a window of opportunity for me to get the pieces painted Thursday night as he's going to be shooting clear on other jobs at the shop and can squeeze me in with them. So hustling to get them ready and finalize colors lol.

Narrowed it down to Red, Blue/blushish shade metallic, or white/ballon white pearl (was previously toying with the idea of painting tank this color to match my brother's R1) although my buddy at the shop doesn't think it would look good as just a strip color without the body of depth of the whole tank.

Any suggestions?

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

Ok, having a hard time settling on a color scheme lol here are some of the choices I've come down with. Welcome to some suggestions, which do you guys think looks best.

colortestredstriped-1.jpg
colortestsilverstripped-1.jpg
colortestblue-1.jpg

I'm leaning toward the Red/white stripped version. ignore the "23" that'll just be a vinyl sticker and obviously its out of perspective lol. The seat is currently in the style i think i'll go with, with a "wrapped" seat cover. i like the cleanness of it and classic look to contrast the modern materials.

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)

Go for number 23 and by that I mean the red and white

Cool! I'm an industrial design student at UC right now, in my 4th year. What kind of work do you do?

Bike looks great by the way

Re: Modernish 360 Cafe build(carbon fibering it up!)
